you never get to choose
you live on what they sent you
and you know they’re gonna use
the things you love against you

The year is 1978, and the Marauders have just graduated Hogwarts at or near the top of their class. They and their fellow classmates harbor no delusions about the world they are entering as they embark upon their chosen careers: the wizarding community is at war, and it is time to choose a side. Lord Voldemort and his followers, the Knights of Walpurgis, have steadily risen to power since the early 1970's, and as things stand now the future looks grim for dissenters. Albus Dumbledore, champion of the cause against Voldemort, has taken the initiative to re-establish an organization that has existed in many incarnations since the time of Hogwarts's founders: the Order of the Phoenix. Both factions have gained supporters as well as full-fledged members in recent years, and the two are on the brink of an open clash as Voldemort's presence in the wizarding world becomes more visibly menacing.

Attacks on members of the magical community have become more frequent; people take every precaution they can devise to stay safe, but to no avail. On June 21st, 1978, in a particularly brutal demonstration of power and purpose, the Knights of Walpurgis stormed a Diagon Alley book store in broad daylight, massacring everyone inside. All told, seven people were in the wrong place at the wrong time: Finnegan Compson, Marius Janvier, Samson Bloom, Catherine Tarleton, Serguei Konstantin, Archibald Collins, and Sybil Trelawney.

Though neither Trelawney nor the rest of the world was aware of the prophecy she would have made had she lived even one year longer, much less the impact it would have upon history as the next generation would come to know it, her death has changed the course of the war in a fundamental way. Voldemort is continuing to amass and consolidate his considerable power, the Order is working furiously to stop him, and the Ministry is working furiously to ignore the looming threat he poses. It is up to the Marauders and their compatriots to decide what comes next as the situation escalates and spirals outwards, beyond Britain’s shores. The Order members whose fates might have been decided by Trelawney's prophecy and who overheard it are now free to make decisions that may or may not lead them to their deaths. The war against Voldemort has been placed solely in the hands of this generation; if they do not find a way to stop him, all hope will be lost.

The year is 1978, and the wizarding world is lying in wait, eyes shut tight against the terror that will surely be upon them soon. Voldemort has no equal, and it is only through a combination of ingenuity and solidarity that the Order will be able to defeat him. With Sybil Trelawney's death, some doors have been opened—others closed—but one thing is undeniable: everything will be different. Times are dark, the future is uncertain, and everyone must sleep with one eye open if they expect to survive. Voldemort's beast, an ideology woken from its thousand year slumber, is slouching towards Britain to be born as the Order of the Phoenix scrambles to guard against its arrival.

This is SHALLOW SLEEP.
