These days, more gamers are becoming older and older, as technology allows video games to appeal to a greater range of people. Since more and more gamers expect some maturity in their games these days, most game developers have responded. Even a genre that was once concidered to be cartoony and non-violent, the platformer genre, has found ways to express maturity. Sony's Jak is a great example. Jak II and Jak 3 were critically acclaimed games that proved older gamers can still enjoy platformers. Look at Ratchet & Clank... it's still cartoony, but it features explosive weapons and plenty of humor to appeal a wider range of gamers. Even Crash Bandicoot tried maturing by making Crash... well, sort of crazy. And next is Sonic the Hedgehog... he's been around for 15 years and barely changed a bit. Well, according to Sega, all of that is going to change.

In the upcoming next-gen game currently titled Sonic the Hedeghog, Sonic has grown up. Sonic is no longer the stubby, kid-like bullet of blue spiky fur. While keeping his smirky smile, giant blue head spikes, and classic white and red outfit, Sega has grown Sonic into an adult by means of a few simple techniques. The team has basically stretched his legs and arms to relatively human proportions. Thus, Sonic still looks just like he always did, but now he's about 5'10". In fact, all of the characters, including Dr. Robotnik and Sonic's new nemesis, a white hedgehog, retained a relatively human-sized height. This marks Sonic's third transformation.

Due on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 this fall, Sonic's new game follows a simple narrative premise. In a pristine kingdom holding a royal family, a certain Princess Elise retains a chaos emerald -- and a deep secret. In an inevitable turn of events, Dr. Robotnik learns of the emerald and kidnaps the princess, and thus the emerald, and Sonic is compelled to retrieve her and the precious stone. The new rival, basically a cream-colored furry that looks remarkably like Sonic, appears in the one cutscene, peering down from an overlooking hill into a village, and proclaims, "I've finally found it, the Iblis Trigger." The Iblis Trigger is apparently Sonic, and this new rival apparently has supernatural powers, and will be playable.

The next-gen game will apparently feature standard action stages and free-roaming town stages. An actual release date has not yet been confirmed, but when I learn of a date... I'll post it here. Hopefully Sonic's new look and new formula will be enough to finally make Sonic's transition into 3D trully worthwhile.

And for those nostalgic gamers who like Sonic's regular old look, new games for both DS and Wii are currently being rumored. Plus, in a new PSP game called Sonic Rivals, the classic Sonic will return in an all-new adventure. :sonic:

i think this game is going to flop like Shadow the Headchog the "more adult-aim game" :ph43r:

Sonic, give it a break, you won't be good in 3D riding on rails 24-7. stick to 2d or even pinball...that was a fun game right there. :knuckles:

You know, this next-gen game actually sounds like it is being aimed towards an older audience, much more so than Shadow the Hedgehog. All the Shadow game had that would make it more "mature" was a gun... but it was the cheesiest gun ever. The game looked and played exactly like the other 3D sonic games, actually. When I played it, I used the traditional sonic moves rather than using the gun to attack, because... well, the gunplay was that bad. But the new sonic looks to be much different. The series is being completely rewritten, so this scenario is nothing like the lackluster Shadow the hedgehog game.

ehh, i havent even played the new shadow game but based on word i heard it got lots and lots of mixed reviews.

as far as sonic being in played in 3d, i think its fine and could definetely be a bit more refined. i enjoyed the sonic adventure titles, preferebly the first one only because of it's free roaming aspect where you travel through towns and stuff. thought that was pretty neat and was something different yet entertaining for the franchise. cool to see that come back in this new sonic game.

however, seeing and reading impressions of people playing silver is giving me the feeling its gonna hamper down the fast and speedy gameplay we know and love. especially since how slow he is, sonic games were meant for fast paced action, not sluggish stop and shoot gameplay (shadow the hedgehog) or searching for random crystals in a large enviroments (knuckles and rouge looking for crystals in sonic adventure 2) course, i didnt mind that too much but it wasn't something that was as fun as running at mach speed through a city while being chased by a giant semi truck.

i totally look foward to playing this new sonic title along with the others on the wii and ds, 3d or not.

can you be a bit more specific? i understand people have their own preference on games, even sonic fans on sonic games but saying that there isnt a plot to 3d sonic games and saying that all he does is...grind rails is a bit too vauge. not to mention thats pretty much what he does in any other sonic game these days thats an action game, besides running or occasionally being on a vehicle. there was a plot to sonic adventure and sonic adventure 2, otherwise shadow wouldnt have never come about in the first place, unless youre saying the plot sucked then i can understand what you then mean.

other than that...i havent come accross one sonic game that hasnt sucked made by sega, suffice to say that more than likely shadow the hedgehog would suck to me, lol. :P

also, it wouldnt exactly be natural if sega wouldnt release a sonic game on a 3d capable console regardless of the "2d is better" opinion made by a small percent of the public. especially since sonics fan base is so large its pretty much inevitable that they'd make a 3d sonic game by consumer demand.

EDIT: little to no plot*

I like Infest. He speaks his opinion and sticks with it. :tails:

Infest is right... your comment isn't entirely accurate, Big Boss. The new Sonic games have plot... maybe not the most complex plot ever devised... but still a plot. And for the record, I actually enjoyed the storyline for Sonic Adventure 2.

The 3D Sonic games thus far have all gotten mixed reviews, but as for me (with the exception of Shadow the Hedgehog)... I liked them all. :sonic:

I doubt we'll be seeing the chao again in the upcoming next-gen Sonic game for PS3 and Xbox 360. Which is too bad, because I thought the chao were great... especially in Sonic Adventure 2: Battle. I even had the Tails chao... >_>

But chao or no chao, I think I can manage... o_o

Here's the link to the japanese site for the new game. There's not much there... just a movie, really...

i will admit 3d sonic has had its problems..(anyone else remember/hate falling through the dock from the first lvl in sonic adventure 1 for dreamcast?((where the whale was chasing you))glitche slike that suck hehe. shadow was horrible imo...guns were cool but its not something you can base a huge part of a game off of..i mainly used his sonic-like skills as well.

This tralier looks very promising...in the cutscene i can see how its "more adut" it actually gives eggman a more human like complexion isntead of this big oval. But other than that i dont see this adult theme. But this definitely looks like its going to deliver action/speed wise. Is this game supposed to relate to other sonic games in any way?

Its cool that shadow is here and everything..but lately nothing makes sense to me...why shadow as still alive after SA:2....so his appearance in sonic heroes and his own spin off baffles me. dont get me wrong i love the guy but im just confused >.<

I can definitely say im looking forward to this new title.

P.S.-hi guys lol i came in to say hello =p

Ive played alot of sonic games, so I know how they have changed too. But my all time favorite was the first Sonic Adventure. I never saw that glitch where you fall through the docks poe O_o.

Anyways, adult-themed isnt really the correct way to describe the new sonic game >_> if it was really adult themed hed be cussing at people and stealing peoples cars and itd be bloody.

Sorry, I'm posting to answer Poe's question on how shadow survived. First of all if you played Shadow the Hedgehog, *spoilers*

During the fight agienst Black Devil (or what ever his name is) if you wait 15 mins into the battle Dr. Eggman will say "Listen to me shadow, I have something I want to tell you. After the battle agienst the Biolizard you fell to the Earth and somehow survived, I've found you a month after and helped you regain your str. (or something like that) Now that you know the truth Go Kill Black Doom!"

*end of spoiler*

So yeah that answers your question Poe :megaman:
