First things first; I puchased the PSP two weeks ago today, along with Wipeout Pure. And, after two weeks of getting my ass kicked (repeatedly) by the awesomeness of this device, I'm ready to report back to VSC.

This isn't a review; I'll do that later. But this is a topic to discuss the PSP, and what you think of it.

For one, I'm now officially sold. I own a DS, and I intend on using it, but I can see the PSP being used far more. As for the rest of you, it's your opinion. But I want to discuss what exactly that opinion is, and what fuels it, here. :P
Yeah, we all know the image in avatar is a fake PS3 logo. Nobody needs to tell me. >.>

PSP's games haven't "wowed" me yet... except for that Twisted Metal game, which is pure awesomeness just by the looks of it. The PSP simply is a pure wonderous piece of technology, and many will argue that it pwns the DS any day of the week, excluding katilsday (that's the new day of the week invented by NBC, simply so they could have "Dateline Katilsday"... lol, that's a family guy joke). Ahem, yes, the PSP has what most people want, stae-of-the-art technology and a portable device capable of many forms of entertainment.

But on the other side of the spectrum, Nintendo's innovative wonder, the DS, is more like a bold move that the japanese love and the americans take caution towards. DS sales are skyrocketing in Japan and steadily rising in America, as more and more people play their new systems. However, the DS's approach to gaming can be quite unique and unfamiliar to casual gamers, resulting in a rapidly-growing population of gamers who dislike the DS.

It's hard to compare systems that are so unalike. But here's my opinion: the psp is godlike, yes, but the launch games are limited and the price is ridiculously high for a handheld... meanwhile, the DS brings long-awaited innovation into our lives, and along with the reasonable price range and hanful of interesting titles, the DS proves to be a better choice... especially for the bold and daring gamer willing to experience something new.

But alas, it's too early to speculate... both systems have limitless potential, and the portable console wars can swing in anyone's favor from here on in. Eh, let's just keep it at this... both simply pwn! :tails:

In my opinion, I think it's just time to face the facts and say that the PSP is the dominant system. But that's doesn't mean that the DS isn't any good. The two factors one must really consider are they're tastes in games, and how much money they have in their wallet. The PSP released with a few of it's most popular franchises, while the DS re-released Super Mario 64... Which you can now play wherever you are. Plus a lot of third-party games and Wario Ware. Nintendo has lots of promising plans for it's new console, including wireless online play and the DS versions of popular Mario franchises. (Mario Kart, Tennis, Golf, and Party). Even Animal Cossing! It cna also play all previous Game Boy games. But not everyone wants to feel like they've gone back to the days of the N64, and want to move on to higher expectations by buying a PSP. But I've always been a Nintendo fan. So

Of course the PSP attracts a genereally older population of gamers, who would obviously have just that much more money to buy themselves a shiny black PSP. Like any Sony product, it can play DVDs and Music as well as games... At an amzing 128 Bits. But there's a setback--it only plays Disks formatted for the PSP. This means buying new DVDs and it cannot play any Playstation games (unlike the PS2). But for most people, it isn't much of a problem. But I'm just disappointed about the battery life. If I was going on a 2-Day trip to New York, I don't want the batteries to die when I'm in the middle of Metal Gear Ac!d.

In my last post, I offered a vague description of my opinions towards the PSP and DS. In this post, I'll trash the PSP. In my next post, I'll trash the DS. Stay tuned.

Very true, Aceist. Very good points.

However, I still beg to differ. We're all glamoring over PSP's sleek-design and amazing specs, but what evidence do we have of it dominating the DS? Sales aren't a factor, because PSPs first-week sales aren't any higher than the DS's first-week sales in America. And although the PSP out-sold the DS in it's first-week, the DS came back as sales pwned the PSP a few weeks later. What other evidence do we have? Better games? Gimme a break. Currently, PSP's launch titles are limited, the only game catching my attention is Twisted Metal. Meanwhile, the DS has a hanful of fun games, but even so... it still seems rather limited. But I'm eyeing more DS games than PSP games right now, hands down. People who claim the PSP pwns the DS right now are basing it simply on specs, which is rather foolish. It's the games that make the system, and currently.. both systems are in grave need of more games. Basically, the portable console wars are still anyones game. Nobody literally pwns anybody at this point.

I dislike some of Sony's approaches to this portable marvel. First of all, I think playing movies on your PSP is much more trouble than its worth. Not only do I doubt that many companies will jump the bandwagon in developing specially-designed UMB movies for the PSP, but purchasing a UMB formatted disc costs 30 bucks alone, making a movie for the PSP costs 50% more than it does on your standard DVD player. Basically, you can get three DVDs at the cost of two PSP movies. It's ridiculous. And on top of all that, the selection of movies to choose from are severly limited, so if you plan to watch movies on your PSP... you better be fond of Spiderman 2, lol.

And the PSP is an mp3 player too, huh? Wow, amazing! Is should also have a built-in cell phone? Or how about a built-in toe-nail clipper? Or maybe even a built-in toaster too? Are you writing these down, Sony? C'mon, add these in your next system to rig up the price! Honestly, though, why use your PSP as an mp3 device was many people already own an mp3 player or an iPod? Sure, a free additional mp3 option on the side would be nice, but this feature isn't really "on the side". In the end, it adds to the PSP's already costly price. Unnecessary! If the PSP wanted to be the dominant portable system out there, it should focus on video games, which would result in a slightly more reasonable price, which, in the long run, would result in a device practically everyone could own. Duh.

I use my Hibatchi wide-screen TV to watch television. I use my Dell Dimension PC to browse the internet. I use my Apple iPod to listen to music. I use my portable DVD player to watch DVDs on the go (although I don't actually own one, but if I did... I would). I use my PSP* to play games. Period.

(* I've played the PSP, but I have not personally invested in a PSP yet.)

My point is, I don't like monopolies, which is the same reason I don't like EA Games, WalMart, or Uncle Pennybags, lol. Thus, I don't like Sony's approach to their latest monopoly, the PSP. Sure, I love the system's specs, which is commonly used as enough reason, alone, to why the PSP dominated the DS. And the games in development look like must-play experiences. But is all the side-flair necessary? No? It is well-liked? Unfourtunetly. The mp3 player and UMB support basically acts as bait, which new and casual gamers salvage off of when Sony dips their fishing rod of monoply into the ocean of gamers.

Call me conservative, or old-fashioned, but gaming systems need to remian as they are... gaming systems.

Yeah I've seen man pictures of the PSP and it looks amazing, a total gadget. I heard it can play movies, music, games and has wireless connectivity. I just found out that PSP made over 150 million dollars in the United States. Heres the article

I haven't heard of any amazing games either. Now Gameboy is going to have a run for its money. I just hate it that they release the DS and PSP and neither have amazing games. Well since the DS is backwards compatible its a bonus. PSP is going to need some good starter games in order to really dominate. I can't believe there was barely any games released for the DS when they could have made Zelda, Wario, Mario Party, Kingdom Hearts and other classics into DS games. Im disappointed at the games for both systems. Well hopefully there will be better games. Other than that, the rest of the features are amazing.
