Well, it's official. The Nintendo DS will be availible later this year. The system itself has undergone some changes since it was last seen at E3 as well. Below is an article from CUBE.IGN.COM, that will explain all the finalized news about the Nintendo DS.

Quote:

Nintendo this morning revealed that the Nintendo DS, the company's upcoming dual-screen handheld system set for release at the end of this year in the US and Japan, will retain the codename as its official name. The company also revealed the system's newer design that's been sleeked up since its debut at this year's Electronic Entertainment Expo two months ago.

The retooled Nintendo DS features a thinner, black base and an angular platinum flip-top cover. The face buttons and shoulder buttons are larger, and some have been reconfigured for optimum use. The unit includes a new storage slot for the touch screen's stylus, and the speakers now broadcast in stereo sound, with or without headphones.

Software companies worldwide have more than 120 Nintendo DS games in development. Nintendo alone is developing more than 20 titles, and in excess of 100 companies have signed on to create games for the new system. The company is expected to announce the launch date, price, and game line-up in the near future.

"The Nintendo DS will change the future of hand-held gaming," says Satoru Iwata, president of Nintendo Co., Ltd. "Dual screens, chat functions, a touch screen, wireless capabilities, voice recognition - these abilities surpass anything attempted before, and consumers will benefit from the creativity and innovation the new features bring to the world of video games."

And even more enjoyable is the DS's slightly modified look. Instead of looking like an oversized Game Boy with two screens and small buttons, it's now a sleek, sexy, gorgeous-looking device that's thinner and has slightly larger buttons. It reminds me of the GBA SP in the form of sleekness and visual attraction. The PSP better watch its back... the DS looks cooler now (and more affordable).

Ok that looks cool. Well i can't really say which handheld will dominate but i know that the PSP has tons of features that is almost a handheld PC that can play DVD's!
Now im not sure of the DS features but i think PSP will have the best features. However the price is also a factor and I hear that the PSP isn't cheap, im guessing 200-300$. I just don't like the fact that you will have to look at two screens, One screen is enough. Well i hope we get more info soon.

It already has good games on the way... like Animal Crossing DS!!! That's gonna be so awesome!!!

I'm gonna get the DS at its launch, cause I can afford the entire console after just one paycheck... (on average) :)

in my game informer magazine, i saw a chinese guy holding a DS and it doesnt quite look like that tails. its not as curvy and its more "box like". even though im not a PS2 fanboy, i think the PSP is a ton better than the DS and will gain the lead over handhelds

Yea, that's the old model. No, not the chinese guy... I'm talking about the DS, of cource! That's an old DS model, as first premiered at E3 2004. This new model is the confirmed and finalized one. GI, which is an awesome magazine, might I add... hasn't featured this new design in their mag... yet.

How could you say that, Papa? Can you rely just on specs? If you can, good for you... but I can't. I can't judge the PSP until there are games people can actually play on the system. As of now, all we've seen is clips and footage that is apparently from the console... but nobody's ever given the system a test-play yet.

::answers to tails 1st paragraph::- ya i know. the second i posted my previous post, my friend on IM showed me the pics of the finalized DS (::kicked himself::) but i didnt want to double post.

::answers to tails 2nd paragraph::- that was just my opinion. i mean, the DS has GREAT qualities like the touch screen and the dual screen concept as well. but in the battle between the two, i think most will go for the PSP because of the rather cheap price for its qualities, and all that it has to offer. like mosquitos to a lightbulb

Great, another gameboy, but this time its NOT a gameboy, even though it's basically a gameboy advance with an SP superglued to it, and it plays gameboy games, but remember, it's not a gameboy. Got it?

Urgh, i can't wait for pictochat. Quote from EGM,"Candidate for "Most Likely TO Be Conficated By The Teacher"". THis thing is gonna change my world.

Animal Crossing DS.....not on my top ten list, but i'll probly download it first.

PSP can't play DVD's. It can play special movies that are made on the special disk(which also happens to be made by Sony.......hmmmmmm).

I don';t know whats all the fuss about DS not having an analog stick and the PSP having one. The DS does have an analog stick, but its very very flat. Hint- TOuch Screen. THink about it. Move the stylus slowly up to move forward slowly, move it all the way to the top to move fast. Porblem Sol-ved.

Analog sticks are cool, but definetly not mandatory. I don't understand why people even care if it has an analog stick... I mean, it has a touch screen! How revolutionary is that for a video game system? Very. The analog stick once was revolutionary, when the N64 first debuted it (Sony DID NOT introduce the analog stick, they simply made analog controllers at a later time by mimicking the N64 and it's analog controller).

Of cource, just because it's revolutionary doesn't mean it's good. The N64 analog stick bruised alot of palms, thanks to the analog-spinning technique that was required in Mario Party. Man, that was painful... and some people even have the scars to prove it... -_-

This thing is just basically a Cybiko, with an extra screen and voice recognition. I used to have a Cybiko, until it got pushed under a chair and someone sat on it. Anyway, that thing was really cool, and it had games on its memory chip(it was more of a chip than a hard drive). Anyway, I hope to have enough to buy one of these two. What about the games? Will they be like GBA cartridges?

Heh, I bet the most contributed Playstation fanboys will buy those DVDs configured to be played on the PSP. Sony is doing all this stuff for the PSP that basically makes it a giant cashcow so they cn pour it all into development for their next home console. That way they can ship out more things faster than Nintendo or Microsoft I believe. And Papa, you're not actually going to be looking at both screens at the same time, imagine you're playing Super Mario Kart in one player mode, and on the bottom half of your screen you can see the map of the track and the racers going around. That's basically what the touch-screen is going to be when it's not used for control, and when that happens the two screens switch places, and the regular screen becomes idle I would guess. I think the best thing about the DS will be you can play all Gameboy games on it as well.

Man, I do remember getting those blisters opn my palm from Mario Party. The best way to get the most rotations is using the palm of your hand, but it hurts after a while. I would really like to see some Multiplayer MarioKart, Tennis, Golf, and even Party along with a chat section... Seaking of chat, will they have headset-compatible outlets or some sort of keyboard deal?

My opinions about the PSP are not all that great. They have a few PSP games, but not nearly as many for the DS at this rate. The thing is the PSP had most of it's featured games already playable for the PS2, so it's like the PS-One, which is basically a portable Playstation but now more sleeker and advanced quality and such. It also plays PS games as well. As far as Quality vs. Quality between the two consoles, it's old school 64 bit goodness with new twists or a portable 128 bit console. I also wonder--is the PSP online? Heck if it didn't Sony wouldn't stand a chance.

Out.

Out.

LOL! How... tragic...

I don't like the idea of those mini-DVD discs things that the PSP will use to play movies. I don't want video playback featrures! It's only going to jack up the unit's price! And say you're walking around with your PSP, and someone steals it... thanks to the crummy movie capabilities, the unit's value is higher, and will cost more to replace.

Also, say some teenagers take the PSP with them to school, to camp, to work, to anywhere. It can easily be lost, stolen... you name it. Cell phones can easily be tracked. GBAs can easily be replaced. But if you're trying to create the a portable device that is the ultimate entertainment system, it's going to be like carrying a whole wad of cash around, just waiting for it to be swiped.

My point: we can do without those unnecessary features that makes the PSP more of an exspensive, do-anything device... since we'd rather have it be a device that offers a great gaming experience, and nothing more.

Atleast the PS3 will give customers a choice. You could buy the enchanced PS3, with tons of unique (yet unnecessary) features and online-ready capabilities... or you could purchase the cheaper, games-only type of system.
