Hiya all, first off...Happy new year, I hope it's gonna be Rock and Roll Well, see, I'm listening right now UKJ and reading reviews on Amazon. I've seen 2 I want to share : First: "While Ugly Kid Joe enjoyed success in the early 90s with there "As Ugly as they Wanna Be," (1991) EP and their "America's Least Wanted" (1992) album, the group was more-or-less a lash in the pan. They were more-or-less one of the very last bands of the pop-metal genre to enjoy any success, with their heyday coinciding with the grunge/alt. movement. 1995's "Menace to Sobriety" failed to chart and the band was dropped from the Mercury roster. The band signed with Castle and in 1996 gave it one more try with "Motel California." Had "Motel California" been released just three years later, it could have been a hit. It is an exciting and entertaining hybrid of rock and rap, or what would later be termed "nu-metal." "Motel California" sounds akin to Kid Rock's breakthrough smash "Devil Without a Cause,"(1998). Only "Motel California" is more lighthearted in nature and is more rock than rap. This album just came out at the wrong time. Released three years earlier or three years later, with some promotion, it could have been a hit. While, "Motel California" isn't a lost classic, it's definitely an enjoyable album that deserved more recognition than it got. " Second : "I don't know what happened, but Ugly Kid Joe just sorta dropped off the face of the planet. It's too bad, considering they went from a fun rock (many considered them to be a novelty act, judging them by their singles, of course) band with a slight Aerosmith edge. I really don't know what went wrong. They came along in the heyday of the early nineties glam-metal, not selling out to that particular style, they showed enough musicianship without having to depend on a pretty boy image. This fact, alone, could have helped them to survive through the big Seattle explosion that took place outta nowhere. I was fifteen when this album was released and bought it on a recommendation from the music store clerk. I didn't regret it. While there was still some humor, it was very clear that this album was much more about the music. They showed real talent with tracks like "tommorrow's world" and "Jesus rode a Harley". Shortly after the release of "Menace", "Motel California" followed, but disappeared before I could get my hands on a copy. I think it's high time this band re-unites. With the masses being somewhat more open-minded than they were in 1995, they might actually get the recognition that they deserve. Bring it back guys. we miss ya!" |

thats somewhat true but UKJ had a name of a band thats not serious and it stuck with them espicially in the US Market where they tend to label a band by one song, so i doubt they would recieve any recognition there. UKJ was much more succesfull in europe and also mercury wanted to sell UKJ new album only in europe but UKJ declined, produced the album themselves and disturbuted it through castle world wide. |

Haha...I don't think Tomorrow's World is exactly the most...talent-filled song on the album.

It's pretty close to being the most talented song on the album though, especially for the reason that apparently all 5 members worked on together. And also the fact that, although it has a slow start, when it really starts to flow it REALLy flows. The groove, the energy, it's fucking great! One of my favourites now. Must say though, it took me a while to get it. Back in 1995/6, i used to skip it occasionally (shock horror), i blame that on the slow building intro and the fade in effect.. |
