I started pushing man made snow on Nov. 10 and we opened for skiing on the 15th. Not all of the guys are working full time yet due to the lack of natural snow. Maybe some coming this weekend. |

Hi this is JJ the The groomer for the Ranger snowmobile club in northern Minnesota,we have been out with the roller all week and we have a 12 to 14 inch snow base. the trail to giants Ridge, Biwabik Minnesota, and Gilbert, Minnesota has all been rolled both directions. We also rolled the trail to the connecting Moose line/pequoan trail. For the last two years we have been working on it trail that will go from Hoyt lakes to the skibo tracks To the Yukon trail. we finished that last week and it is now ready to ride so when you go to Hoyt lakes you're not at a dead end anymore you can continue on to the Yukon trail which will hook you up with all the North Shore trails and make continuous loop and you will end up back in Hoyt lakes. If you have any questions about trail conditions conditions please feel free to call me at 218-225-0298. I hope to see you on the trails this winter and ride safe.

Checking in here from Ullr Gulch. First grooming of the season out of the way. We had 5" last night, but it was pretty cold and dry. We'll see whether the hill sets up into the base I need for future snowfalls. I'm trying out the new device (I hesitate to use the term "groomer" until it's proven itself) that I built last summer. It consists of about 36" of chain-link fence section followed by a 30" i.d. corrugated PVC culvert roller. The theory is for the chain link to knock down the mowed vegetation and heat up the snow, then the roller to flatten it. I hope for it to set up overnight into a hard base, so that any later powder is skiable. The vintage '70's Bombardier snowcat is doing yeoman's duty hauling it. I had to make some adjustments to the carburetor's accelerator pump linkage after we rebuilt it, and it seems pretty strong now. I'm not too sure how steep a hill this cat is built to travel safely, but so far I'm still on the successful end of the learning curve. I managed to nearly kill myself while mounting the rope onto the tow a couple weeks ago. Working alone, I released the tensioner at the top of the hill, but didn't have all the weight on it yet. I took it in the forehead. Scary how much head injuries bleed. (Needless to say, I'm rethinking the procedure.) But the lift is all set to go. Meanwhile I got a killer deal on a pair of K2 Hellbent powder skis that I got to ski the first time yesterday at the local ski hill. All I can say is WOW. If things keep up at this rate, it could be a very interesting season. Certainly the lead-up has been. Come on SNOW!! |
