My buddy's new 54" drag; testing a locally built small snow drag

A good friend of mine had a local shop build him a drag which he plans on pulling behind his Ski Doo Renegade 550 to keep one of his favourite feeder trails in shape. He brought the drag to my place to have me install an electric actuator on it to control the cutting height. I have that done now but he's away for a few days and hasn't brought his sled here yet for me to wire the switch and electrical harness onto it. Yesterday, I hooked the drag up to my homemade rig just to see how well it works. It seems to do a decent job and doesn't seem to pull too terribly heavy. I am a bit concerned about how his Renegade will pull it but I think he'll be okay if he stays on the trail and doesn't cut too deep with it. I have no idea how the gearing is set up in his sled.......just thinking he might want to go to a smaller top sprocket to have a bit more low end grunt for grooming. Anybody else using a standard type snowmobile to pull a small drag?

I use a polaris 440 to pull a wooden ladder drag around. It works good for the most part. If I was going to pull metal drags around I would install a small radiator with an electric fan and change the gearing. Looks like a nice drag.
That rig of yours sure is cool :scool: Have fun grooming. Is it fan cooled or does it have a radiator?

My machine is liquid cooled with a rad and a heater core in the cab to provide heat and help keep the engine cool too. But my buddy's Ski Doo Renegade is apparantly just a fan cooled unit and I think that might pose a problem, especially during warmer weather. He doesn't have a whole bunch of trail to groom with it so I'll just tell him it might be a good idea to cool his sled off every couple miles or so. He also has a newer (about a 2009 or so) Ski Doo Tundra with a single cylinder engine. That Tundra of his has gobs of pulling power and I think it might be better suited for pulling a drag than his Renegade, but the Tundra doesn't have electric start so there's no battery to operate the actuator. I suppose he could just mount a fully charged deep cycle battery on the rear rack and that'd likely provide enough juice for quite a long time.
