I just finished installing some Grote Trilliant Mini LED Whitelight work lamps on my groomer. My main reason for switching from the halogens to LEDs was to lessen the load on my alternator, but I'm also quite impressed with the nice white light they produce compared to my old halogen units which gave off a distinctly yellow light. I am using one pair of Grote # 63601 Spot pattern lamps for my high beams and one pair of Grote #63621 Trapezoid pattern lamps for my low beams. Here's a couple links to some vids I did on the lights. I still need to do some adjusting because my high beams seem to be set a bit too low. I did some testing and found that one pair of these LED lights draws approximately 2.1 amps while just one of my old halogen lights was drawing 4.6 amps. So when I had all four of my front halogens turned on, they were pulling 18.4 amps from my charging system. And now with all four of the LED units turned on, I'm down to drawing only 4.2 amps. It wouldn't be a big factor on a full sized groomer with a heavy duty charging system, but with my little rig it's quite a benefit because my engine does not have to work quite as hard as it used to to spin that alternator. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x-RvVDVPYPg http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3TBGkul1quY Edited by vtg, Dec 23 2012, 11:26 PM.

Our club has been discussing LED lights for the back of our drags so you can see the trail behind you at night. Our drags already have power to the back of them to power the flashing lights but we were thinking there might be too much draw if we installed halogen lights to the same circuit. The only issue we are worried about is if the LED lights will be hot enough to melt off the snow or will they just get covered with snow dust? If anyone is using these please let me know if this is an issue. |

We've been using rear and front facing, LED lights with good results. They at times do get covered with powder but we found that they are so powerful, we can hardly tell the difference visibility wise. We've since came to the belief that the more luminous the better so they can throw light right through the snow coating. Posted below is one we use that's rated at 1800lm. Do note this is a spot light, so you can see the LED in the "spots". These are harder to find but are better for lighting of rear implements.

I use the trilliants on my trailer truck for back up lights. Great light, as you pointed out, very low draw. But at about $100 bucks a piece, a bit pricey. But they have a lifetime warranty on them. Snow dust- they will not melt snow dust. As you thought, no heat. But I've used HID's for lights on my moose bumper. Those are low draw, I don't think as low as LED's, but they do throw a bit of heat. http://www.autoanything.com/lights/65A5669A0A0.aspx You would only need one of these on back. They throw 3 times the light of the trilliants. |

I had to get my groomer back to my farm last night and shot a bit more video of the lights while going down a wooded trail. Here's a link to the vid http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M7wATTkg62o |

We have dual LED spotlights on the back of all three of our drags now. I was the test drag last year, and everyone raved how much more you can see behind the drag. They even helped with what is visable in our rear camera too. In really cold temps we have had a little issue with ice, but not enough to worry about. Just have to brush them off when you get out to pee. Well worth the investment! |
