I'm not familiar with Lake Placid NY and we will be there Dec 10-14th for Special Olympics Team USAs training camp (DH skiing, XC etc) and wondered if anyone out there can keep me posted on snow conditions. I'm the head XC coach and would like to know what to expect.
Thanks in advance!

In general Placid (approx. 90 min north of me) has snow by then, as do we. Usually we're skiing by the weekend after Thanksgiving. Last year, of course, there wasn't much skiing.

Will you be at Van Hovenberg, Cascade, or somewhere else? I'm assuming Van Ho...

FWIW we've already had flurries and the high peaks up near Placid (and the higher mountains near me) have been snow-capped once or twice. We're expecting a dusting to an inch this weekend at this point as the remnants of Hurricane Sandy leave the area, but it really needs to get cold so the ground can freeze fully at this point before we can set any sort of base. PM me as we get closer and I can give you the scoop at that point. There are other members that are even closer to Placid too...

We'll be at Olympic Sports Complex – Mt. Van Hoevenberg. Thanks for the info and I will stay in touch as we get closer to Dec. 10th. Do they make snow there?

Whiteface (downhill) definitely makes snow (as does Gore, which is very close to me and ORDA (Olympic Regional Development Authority) also operates), I do not believe Van Hovenberg does, but I could be wrong. Generally they have snow by December though, so if we have a "normal" year you should be good to go. A few inches is forecast for Monday. I doubt it will stay long (it's in the 60's right now due to the hurricane), but if we get some frost in the ground we may yet be skiing by the end of November as usual.
