Hello, Just bought a 2006 BR-180 last month with 5000hrs. I've been changing most of the fluids and filters (eng, hydraulic, hystat). I also did the final drives and wanted to make sure I did it correctly. I saw there were two plugs on the outside of the final drives, so I moved the machine until one plug was on the bottom to drain the oil, then I filled it up to the the other plug which is almost half way up the drive. Is that correct? I should try to locate a manual. Thanks Edited by Grooming12, Feb 2 2012, 10:56 PM.

Bob~Bardier here, That is correct, and try and make a practice of using a fluid pump and filling the hub from the bottom so as to purge air from the gear oil. Because the gear oil is very heavy it is easy to under fill the hub by putting oil in at the upper plug hole. By taking your time and filling the hub from the bottom, the gear oil better fills all of the voids and pushes air out of the oil rather than introducing air into the oil by filling from the upper plug hole, filling from the bottom can be a bit messy but just over fill a bit pull the hose from the bottom hole and put the plug in quickly as possible. Under-filling the hub will cause premature damage, hope that makes sense and good luck! Bob Gallegos Edited by BOB BARDIER, Feb 3 2012, 03:21 AM.

Also do not forget the brakes as well. Where in upstate NY are you? As a PRINOTH rep.-PRINOTH bought the snowcat division from Bombardier, we can be of assistance for parts and service. I can be reached at 518-791-6897. Call the Eastern US RDC at 603-267-7840 for parts and that all importain service guide. |

What is the proper drive oil for the BR180? Univis Extra or Univis Ultra? |

Any type of ATF Type F can be run in the BR180 hydrostatic drive system. Dont need any fancy or exotic types of oil. Make sure however that it is not a Dextron 3 oil. As a note type F is still available and dont use dextron. If you dis agree let me know and I will write out the full f vs dextron story. If it is the 2 tank system some guys run atf in both tanks instead of hydraulic oil in the aux. or upper tank. |

I'd love to hear the nitty gritty details. Trying to learn as much as possible. |

Just use a good universal hyd oil and make sure that you do oil samples on a regular basis and keep the oil CLEAN. |

I agree with Mr. Craig, the Bombardier Factory reccomendation is ATF Type F it is available I strongly reccomend it. Bombardier Factory engineers spent years dealing with the testing of other fluid types, Hydraulic fluids & transmission fluids such as Dextron Mercon. ATF Type F is the correct fluid to use in the BR-180. Regards, Bob Gallegos Edited by BOB BARDIER, Oct 19 2012, 08:02 PM.

Here's more info about using ATF Type F for Sundstrand hydro systems. The pour point is well within spec for the 90 series motors for the cold temps we all operate in. http://www.frontieraginc.com/Energy/Lubricants/TransmissionFluids/TypeF-ATF.pdf |

I too use ATF type F. However I contacted Pisten Bully about a machine with a similar pump setup as the BR180, and they recommended Type F or dexron/mercon. They said for fluid changes they were using dexron. So I was curious about the difference. |

some dextrons meet the type f spec, ask your oil guy if yours does say yes his product does - in writting then by all means use it. The bottom line is a failed hydrostatic will cost you 2 drive pumps, 2 drive motors, I have seen the cooler plugged, and sometimes metal imbedded in the drive hoses. Get the machine back to the garage, 8 hrs to pull the 4 pumps and motors, 8 hrs to put back together, 3-4 hrs to clean and flush.......get the picture. oops and I forgot-explaing to the club where the $20,000.00 is going to come from to pay for the repairs all because the guy at the auto parts store said "sure, I dont see why this other stuff wont work"

We use Mobil 424 in our BR180 and LMC 1500 and have had great results at a cost of about $9 per gallon. There are many things to consider when maintaining a hydrostatic system, KEEP IT CLEAN, NO WATER, SAMPLE THE FLUID AND CHANGE THE FILTERS AT REGULAR INTERVALS, LET THE MACHINE WARM UP PROPERLY BEFORE OPERATING IT, KEEP IT COOL AND KEEP THE SYSTEM TUNED UP -PSI SETTINGS. The reason Type F fluid is used in these systems is it easily available at any gas station or parts store but the last gallon of Dextron I bought from the parts store cost me $16 lot more expensive then Mobil 424 hyd oil. I work for a road construction/mining company in WI and we run this oil in a bunch of our equipment year round and have 20,000 hours on some of that equipment and still running strong. But a GOOD program is needed to keep an eye on whats going on. The other thing I would make sure about is just because Sunstrand allows Type F in there pumps maybe another manufacture of a different componet on the same machine doesn't allow that fluid in there hyd motors like Poclain or others. Where are you guys getting your ATF-F? Also, I have Chevron Clarity (AW-32) in my rig now. Can I just drain the reservoir, refill with ATF-F, cycle the system, drain reservoir, refill? Thanks! |
