I thought I would have a flooded frozen mess when I headed down to the trail to groom after work yesterday-that warm spell over the weekend left a ton of rain and temps that should have taken a toll on the trail. (I know in MN, their rain turned to snow Sunday, but not here) Well, instead I hit it during a magic hour I think-the temps dropped from 32 during the day to 25 while I groomed and instead of chopping boilerplate, the G2 could cut into the snowpack while it still was a tad bit soft. I was amazed how nice I could clean up all the melted/frozen tracks and lay out pretty good corduroy. I decided to put down new tracks also-it's been a while, so with the teeth set just cutting into the old classic tracks, I was able to press new ones in that looked decent. I think they will be rock hard now for a while as we head into a deep freeze this week. (Does anyone else like the track setting of the ginzu over the G2? I do, but that's a whole 'nother post). I guess this post is just about lucking out once and a while on grooming timing. Oh, BTW, I tied out the Grizzlies differential lock today for the first time. I stopped midway on a steep climb (pulling the G2, teeth down), hit the differential lock button, and started crawling up the steep pitch. I didn't know if I'd get up, but no spinning tracks, and I was able to finish the climb. (I wasn't looking forward to unhooking if I got stuck, but wanted to experiment). Crested the hill, hit the button to go back to normal 4X4 mode and away I went. Nice to know I can use the diff. lock if needed like that. |

Nice timing! I had a great experience like that years ago grooming for Sunday River XC in Maine. Warm temps during the day, trails were really beat up, forecast was for single digits overnight. I went out on one of their old Alpines with a 6' Tidd and it was like grooming butter- things looked great, drained well overnight, and froze up nicely. Some of the drier areas didn't need to be touched the next day...the wet areas did, but was easier to deal with the PB and tiller since it was at least level (and that was ice). Nice test on the Grizzly:) I need to get a trial one over to my place and test it on some of my hills - if it can make it up ALL of them I'll be impressed (one I won't even try though, at least with someone else's machine:) ) |

Glad the trails survived. Southern MN got the rain and warm temps. but no real snow out of it. We've got our skate lanes back to pretty good shape, our classic tracks are shallow but better than nothing. Couchsachraga, I've never driven an Aplina, but I'm guessing if your Alpina's make it up the hills the Grizzly will too. I played with an older 650 grizzly last week and a Rhino both with tracks. They went places with an 84" Ginzu that our 550 Skandic WT wouldn't have made it without the drag and our 800 SWT wouldn't have made with the drag. Having the 4 tracks and the differential lock really do help a lot. |

There are some hills I can't make it up...even with a roller. Other hills I've worked on / rerouted so once it is rolled I can make it up with the Ginzu... and then down the rest of them. A Grizzly with tracks sounds really good these days:) This summer or next the barn gets a new roof - after that I'm hoping to upgrade the fleet a little:) Thankfully I've got that Alpine II now which is a HUGE step up comfort wise from the Alpine I. |
