I stopped at the city ski trails in Glens Falls, NY. They had 4' Tidd Tech attached to a YTS Scarifier which in turn was attached to their sled. It was an old hard packed surface. The type a Tidd Tech Trail Tenderizer can't bust up. However with this outdated implement they were able to bust up the hard pack and put in a nice track set. For some of us not being able to swing the $3000+ for a G2 or Ginzo this may be the answer to set tracks. I understand originally YTS intended for the Scarifier to be used in conjunction with the Compaction Drag. The scarifier has some aggressive teeth on the bottom and looks pretty inexpensive to make. Has anyone had some other experience with the YTS Scarifier. I don't think they make it anymore. |

I have one that I've just started to use. It does claw up the surface pretty well. I drag a Tidd packer tracker behind it so it's working ok now but not sure what will happen if we get above 32 and then freeze. My big puzzle now is how to get it across a paved road (twice). It also pulls about 6" of snow in on each side for what it's worth. Steve |

I used the YTS/Tidd Packer "train" this weekend and was very satisfied. One pass was usually adequate and two passes churned up some pretty good stuff. Best part was that 85% of the footprints and snowshoe marks were erased. Two issues I've found- 1 - my woods trails tend to "bow" down in the middle and since the scarifier is a foot and a half wider (66 vs. 48) than the packer tracker, the rippers often don't engage the center in my narrow woods trails. Open areas are not affected as much. 2 - Unit rides on a single pivot point and if side skis drop into a depression too much, they may catch and the whole thing dumps forward and pulls along on the tips of the skid-skis. My 570 Bearcat appeared to handle it ok, I could feel it when those teeth engaged hard pack at slow speeds. Also, turning appears to be compromised a little. The original 2006 carbides are still on it and I'll look at changing these before a pricier option like flexi ski. I'll try to take a picture of the setup soon. A daylight shot will have to wait for the weekend. Edited by sschriber, Jan 18 2010, 12:57 PM.

I may need to borrow the YTS Scarifier from a friend after the rain stops here in Upstate NY. Temps are going to drop and my 6' Tidd will just dance on the hardpack and ice. I've seen these Scarifiers just sit in fields and never used. But why would YTS make them prior to Ginzu's if they didn't work? Kind of a simple design which I like. I like how you added the weights to it too. Great pics and thanks for sharing. Did you buy yours from Oles in Vermont? They were selling a Scrarifier a few years go. |

Wow, what a memory! I did buy it from Oles up in Warren VT a few years back. It was quite a white knuckle drive in my father in law's old pickup on a cold and squally weekend. They also had a 5x8 compaction drag that was just too big for me to use. I'm glad they were OK to split the two up. Right now each weight stack has 30 lbs. I might up that to try to eliminate some of the bounce I get in a couple of the hard spots. Problem is that the teeth are slightly claw shaped so they really dig in at slow speeds... the only time in the 4 years I've had the Bearcat that I could use a low gear. |
