three sleds, little grooming done

Our little trail system uses three sleds to keep us in the grooming business. Since we only have around 18K of trails, this should be pretty easy using our classic 1998 widetrack Polaris, 2010 IQ widetrack and of course our deluxe 3yo VK Professional. Sadly I’ll have to admit we’ve barley kept one sled in working this year! The VK and 1998 Widetrak have been in and out of there respective shops for the past month. We had planned to retire the 1998 sled but instead we’ve been using it on regular basis since the VK has crapped out on us each time we’ve taken it out. Our locale Yaha shop replaced its battery this fall and said it’s good to go. About 2 weeks later it wasn’t keeping it’s battery charged and she went ca-put. It’s since been in and out of the dealers shop who told us “its fine, it must be your equipments fault”. I’m leaving out lots of details out but with the help of another dealer and Ricardo who posts here, looks like we’re zooming in on it’s elusive problem.. Then the old widetrack is yet another mystery problem which the current guess is the ignition box has a failure in it, that doesn’t show up until its warmed. Gee,, this is the most equipment grief we’ve had in years!!

The more equipment you have... the more there is to break, repair, etc....

I wound up with two sleds when one was broken a few miles back in the woods... I hauled the engine out via toboggan (and snowshoes), but happened across a cheap Alpine while the engine was being repaired... so then there were two:)

Now that I have the Alpine II I'll likely put the older Alpine I up for sale... upkeep on two is easier than three!

I definitely know what you mean with equipment breakdowns - that was last year for me... it seemed every time I went out I got hideously stuck (I'm pretty good with a come-a-long now;) ) and something broke. Each Alpine spent the night in the woods once. Last year we had large (18" +) snowfalls constantly - by the end of Jan. we had 5' on the ground (more had fallen, that is what it consolidated too). This year we have 18" total so far. Lousy year for snow so far... but it's still pretty early.

Good luck getting the sleds sorted out... and what ever did happen with the tracks for the Rhino?

Thanks guys, Funny that we called our 1998 widetrack "Mr. Dependable" until this year. :o For the Rhino; we just about ordered some of those "new and improved" UTV 4S tracks from Camoplast but while doing research came across some fellows who've bent the frames on them. (front and back pods) Hummmmm reports like this so early in a models production made us hesitate. Of course the fellows at atv.net claim its a fluke. For the time being,,, we're waiting to see what sorts out. None the less, to equip the Rhino with tracks, cab and a plow was so costly, our little club didn't expect to get that together until next year anyway.

I try to be conservative when spending someone else's $$$$$$.

The Camoplast rep will be at the Midwest Grooming Clinic here at ABR Trails Jan 20th. He will have three sets of track systems on a Rhino, Grizzly, and Ranger. You might want to check them out in person.
