'96 Skandic won't turn off...

We have a 1996 Skandic 550 WT that has worked good so far but twice in the last week it wouldn't shut off after turning the key, hitting the kill switch & pulling the safety lanyard. After all 3 kill devices it kept running 1-3 minutes. When it's running it's running smooth and normal not like it's running on excess fuel or anything.

The temps have been in the single digits to negative digits all week and both times we had the problem when the snowmobile was started and shut off shortly there after so it was still cold. Once the snowmobile ran a while and warmed up all was fine.

Any ideas on what would freeze and keep all three kill devices from working and the snowmobile running?

I don't know for sure on a Skandic, but I know on an Alpine you can disconnect almost all the wiring harnesses... and it will still run. So I would say check the connections in ALL your harnesses - especially the "main" one (not sure where it is on a Skandic, on the Alpine it is on the top right of the frame that holds the steering column) - if that was loose you could have the problem you describe. Also check to make sure your key socket is not slipping off- I had that problem for a while and solved it by running some tape around the seam - when it was warming up before it fell off, now the tape holds it on nicely:)

Good luck, and keep us posted.

Check your ground wires on the ignition switch and other safety switch's if the ground is bad it will continue to run. As the machine warms the ground contact connection is made unlike when it is cold and your ground is not making good contact. Bad grounds are often the causes of many similiar problems and hard to diagnose.

Sounds like the ignition switch harness is coming loose. Just make sure it is pushed on tight. Do the lights work when its running in the "off" position?

I was out grooming last night. Before starting I checked the wiring (what I could see in my headlamp) all looked good. I started the snowmobile, then pulled the key out, pulled the safety lanyard off and pushed the kill button up on the steering column. All of the lights stay on like normal. I then started playing with all the wiring I could while it was running. Nothing caused it to shut off - I couldn't quite reach the main connections at the battery. After 10 minutes it was still running and I was out of ideas. So I pulled out of the shed hooked up the groomer (still running with no key or safety lanyard. I put the key & safety lanyard back ran a quick loop then it had warmed up enough to turn off.
We'll have to look into it more in the daylight I gues.
