ABR's grooming clinic now has a free day with potential venders showing equipment as listed below. Looks like a few of us will grab some boards and go!!!! Will we see any of you there? This is January 20, 2010 and very near Ironwood MI, I should add that the venders normally have equipment for folks to test out. Or snow total is over 120" now, so Ironwoods shouldn't be to far behind that.

I hope to be there for the demo day and maybe the clinic the next day - haven't decided if I want to sit inside and learn new things or ski all day.

arly-
take a ton of photos for us would ya? If you have a Flickr page or something, maybe a nice photo album spread there would be nice for us to look at (am I asking too much? ;) instead of trying to post here-I know that can be slow. Da*m, I'd love to be there one of these years. Let us know any new equipment or tweeks you see-I've heard Tidd Tech is trying so new things with the G2. Enjoy the skiing too-looks like Wiscony and Minn are in for Fzr and sleet for a couple days here. :(

Here are a few photos of snow equipment taken during the vendor show at ABR trails yesterday. We didn't take all that many photos. Below is some new drags we'd not seen before. We of course wanted to look at and test drive the UTV 4S tracks on a Rhino and we were able to do that at length. There was also two ATV's with tracks, one with power assist steering and the other did not. I had test driven these in the past and didn't this day, but everyone coming off them said "they'd not purchase one without power assist steering". For UTV's with these large tracks from Camoplast, we're now convinced that there flotation over fresh snow is quite good, steering not hard (no assist) and they will go were you point it and pulling capability far superior over any sled we've ever used. Hope that helps.

Oh and the Sherpa was used one from a Duluth MN power co and just $16,000.

Fill us in on the new YTS Drag. Is it missing any components for the show? Could you tell us the concept behind it? For sure it looks like steel not alu. and longer than the current Ginzo's. Thanks.

Well, it was steel and appeared to be a really simple Ginsu. The 2 paddles up front had steel edges for scratching the snow or ice. The report was it wasn't a very good drag. We're not ordering one.

(YST Drag) No cutting teeth??? What does the ram on the front do? I couldn't quite figure it out.

I 'think' the front ram was used to raise, lower the paddles. Never saw it hooked to anything with a plug to see for sure. One of the ABR guys said they use it for early season packing and thats about all. He wasn't sure what the actual plans for it where - probably teeth and such on a longer platfor than the current Ginzu.

Funny your hearings on the ATV's Arly - Most people I talked to like the Grizzly better than the CanAM because the Grizzly steered so nicely. They all thought the Grizzly had power steering but it didn't.

The actuator on the hitch would control the height of the frame and paddles in contact with the surface. As seen is the new drag, no parts missing. (I was chatting with an employee who said that, maybe I missed something?) Last winter while constructing our drag, I was chatting with Doug at Yellowstone who then said they were building a new drag and seems like he said was for people doing dog sled trails. Now that we've seen it, it wouldn't at all do what we use a drag for. I should add that while roaming around in the Rhino, we pulled a Ginsu and the Arrowhead drag pictured. We like our drag design much better that it as well.

I can't see how that new YST would be of use to a XC trail.. ...except to pack maybe. I'm wondering, tho, why all the drilled holes in the mid frame? Wondered if a cutting bar would be mounted in there somewhere, but I guess not.

Arly,

Did you drive the Polaris Ranger and the Yamaha Rhino? Can you offer any comparisons of these two? Did the bigger UTV tracks from Camoplast offer enough floatation even for the Ranger to use it as your one and only grooming vehicle?

Sherpa-man,

What Yamaha sled is in that picture? Doesn't look like a VK Pro.

In the new drag, are the snow paddles interchangeable with any other type of implement?

Thanks.

No Ranger drives, we just test drove the Rhino (repeatedly). But if the Ranger weighted the same, then its PSI would be the same. Although I would say that it being a much wider profile, that might make it difficult to see the Ginsu teeth. The Rhino was narrow enough the operator just looked back out the door and you could see the tooth depth. The tailgate was left on, but we wondered if we could see the teeth if it had been removed.
