Simmons Generation II Flexi-Skis

Last week I ordered a new pair of Simmons Gen II Flexi-Skis. The only difference compared to the original flexi-skis is they are 10 inches wide, but what a difference. I'll attach a couple of comparison pictures at the end. I have a Yamaha VK Pro that I've been grooming with for the last two years and besides the addition of a second radiator, these new flexi-skis are the most dramatic improvement to my sled.

The VK Pro, like many of the new 4 strokes, is very heavy on the front end. That's a good thing most of the time for steering, but in deep powder conditions, or more commonly while grooming the edges of my trails it has been a challenge. As the season goes on I am always trying to widen out my trails as I get more snow to cover those stumps I should really get out in the summer. But with my original flexi-skis on the VK Pro it was very tippy on these outer edges where of course I haven't spent much time packing the trail.

Fast forward to the 10" flexi-skis and things really change - my front ski stance got four inches wider for overall stability, and the outer ski isn't dropping out from underneath me anymore.

Perhaps more subtle, but these wide flexi-skis are actually steering better than my original pair that I have about 6 years of experience with. There is no difference in the dual runner design. The only thing I can attribute it to is that the super wide ski platform, keeps the ski in constant contact with the snow so both runners are always working.

Another fun change is that I can very easily plane with these wide bodies. I was going about 15 mph doing some speed rolling in about 6 inches of powder and I was planing in a way that I never did with the original flexi-skis.

If you are considering flexi-skis for their steering and they are a great addition to any grooming sled, then I would highly recommend the newer wide body version. I don't see any downside performance wise. The only issue might be the kidding you get from other riders when they see these monsters.

Our VK pro steers pretty darn good with its stock skis. I think its a 06 model. We normally add 25 to 75lbs of weight to the front weight mount. Plus the suspension was adjusted for towing and steering. Did you do anything else to your sled to help with steering?

I don't suppose anyone knows if they've ever made these for, say, Alpines? ;) I e-mailed the company but haven't heard anything back.

I switched out the stock skis with a pair of the original flexi-skis I had on my old SWT that I traded in for the VK Pro. Then I had the dealer do the usual suspension adjustments like you mentioned. So I actually don't have any experience with the stock VK Pro skis.

No need for more weight up front with the VK Pro. There is plenty up there already.

Hummmm we might be pulled harder with our VK than you are. We have a few hills where the skis routinely come off the snow so we won’t leave the shop without 25lbs on the weight mount , and we usually carry 50.
