Today we tested out a new a pan actuator on the Ginsu. Looks like we’ll be selling its original Duff/Norton units if anyone cares to purchase them at a very reasonable price. Not sure if anyone cares but we’ve done quite a few modifications to our old YTS drag which is now gone and about to be replaced with a “new & improved” version. Also did a bunch of modifications to our Ginsu which is the earliest version Doug built, our Yama VK and to our Yellowstone roller. Does anyone care to hear what we did to improve these implements?? We’ve got prints and photos of most of the things we’ve done. I’ll attach one photo of the goose neck hitch plate we designed for our VK. It was taller and moved the ball about 3 inches forward. Worked great other than it could have been taller yet. In the photo you can see the electrical box we added which has a trailer female electrical connector in it. Placing this here really worked well.

I'd be interested in hearing what you've done, what has worked, and what didn't (or why you did what you did). Sharing info like this amongst ourselves can save quite a bit of time.

If you don't mind me asking, what actuators did you replace them with? I'm in the market for an actuator....

Absolutely, would like to see some pictures! A pan actuator sounds like what we've been talking about to help combat the plowing of deeper snow. Sounds useful!

The original Duffs just aren't powerful enough and there clutching was insufficient. Our new actuators are from Creative Werks Inc. in Iowa.

Model #LACT6-1000B. These have a ball screw drive and rated to move 1000lbs, and hold 3000. These cost us about $250 each and made in Taiwan. We didn’t like the gearbox YTS is using today because some folks near us blew its gear box and complained that that they have too much "run on" when making slight tooth height adjustments. (coasts to much) Keep in mind we don't know how these will hold up in the long run, but for now they're great.

To our Ginsu we added skags to it but Doug has added them too his current models. Gee this thing wouldn't remotely follow the sled without them! We also added a rack to it so we can carry a chain saw and 2x2 posts for trial marking. I'll attach two photos of our Ginsu with the carrying rack. Its slight lighter in color than the ginsu and has a shovel holder on it. With a gooseneck hitch we needed someplace to carry extra items!

Thats all for Ginsu updates. Other equipment later.

And another!

To our YTS roller we've added a weight mount to the comb, updated the bearings blocks with heavy duty ones and replaced the HDPE pipe it came with because of many holes it developed from striking objects during fall, low snow conditions. While replacing that we considered adding a 4th internal angle iron that holds the end plates on at each end. These "end caps" are what holds the bearings onto the pipe with. I'll attach a photo of the weight carrying mount that's on the comb. This was by far the best modification we've made to it and we commonly ad weights with it, sometimes 50lbs. Adding this mount with weights does add lots of stress to the comb plate so in hindsight we should have made it much wider and spread the weight out. Since this photo was taken we added piece of a flat .75" think HDPE plastic under it to help spread that stress out.

Keep in mind that many of these modifications are similar to what other trail systems have already done and not my original ideas. Having 4 large trail systems nearby does make for a variety of ideas!

If anyone would like PDF file of anything we've built just ask for them at arlyn@superiortandems.com
