A while back I mentioned trying to figure out if a track truck could work on some of my hills, and also mentioned that going UP them with the Alpine took some doing (winching) in deep snow (packed trails are NO problem, that's for sure!). Some one said 'well, let's see a picture of these hills', so here you go. This is not the steepest, but it was the one my father and law and I "skied" last weekend (you'll note something is missing on a lot of the hill...snow! South facing slopes are just about bare, but in the deeper woods, or north facing slopes we still have 2' +).

The last image you see is actually the hill I had a lot of difficulty getting my 4wd tractor up (R1 Ag tires)...it's always difficult trying to take images of the steepness of hills.... I know that vs. an alpine center, and likely a number of snowmobile trails, this is not that steep. My question is is it too steep to even consider a track truck?

I have cut a new trail to get up there, but even that I've had to winch the Alpine up the first time (once it was packed, even in deeper snow, it was OK. I'm hoping if I can get up there with the tractor and level it out a bit it will be OK for next season)

Thank you in advance for your thoughts!

We climb a hill like that with our TT. Our more experienced operators make the run. If traction is not great, it aint going up. Thats with the drag up or maybe just panning.

To be honest, I feel you need to look at something else. You'll probably get the TT up there and drag down, but it's always going to be a risky run and your heart will be racing at the top. I've been called out this year to back the groomer down because traction was icey under the new snow, and it was close to the edge. Not a lot of fun.

Just to let you know we have a diesel TT, with all rubber tracks.

:my2c: With the right operators & diesel TT, Yes you could make it! And if ice is a problem you may want to look at the Roetin screw in studs , I had one club that had problems with 4 wheel drive tractor with chains on the front tires making hills, they remove the chains and put in the Roetin studs and now have a set of front chins for sale!

We try to change our routes, or hit the hills sideways and go up.

re: changing routes...that's why I cut a new trail up in a different location. I have 3 long hills (the images are of the steepest stretch of the "middle" steep hill, but you're looking at maybe 10% of the hill...it goes all the way down to the valley you see) Even that new trail is steeper than I'd like, but once I'm up on that plateau I have access to a lot of terrain and trails.

For now I suspect I'll be sticking with the Alpine, but something along the lines of a track kit like Soucy or the Sur Track 4 does look interesting (mostly because I do use the tractor a lot, and once my truck is paid off I'm threatening to get a newer, tractor with cab (likely 50hp or so). The Blazer conversions look interesting too, but given that I slide down this hill on the Alpine, I'm not sure I'd want to slide down in a larger vehicle. I guess I'm just too used to grousers from the PB070. Now if I could only convince them to sell it to me cheap...(not going to happen, as they are looking for another similar unit as it is).

Thank you for your thoughts!

Got to agree. It sucks going down backwards/sideways/etc. when you're not in control. And i think that'll happen. We had a couple of trouble spots like that, but that aside, I did like the machine for the few years we had it.

The hills look ok for a Track Truck, but you may want to put a winch on just in case.

Even our old gas truck would have likely worked its way up a hill like that, with the drag up anyway. In that you aren't encountering snowmobile traffic and the related moguls, a track truck would be efficient (well cost effective anyway) even with a couple of hills like this. You'd have to turn around and groom back down the hill, but it would work.

We did go up hills that 4x4 tractors struggled with, and sometimes struggled with hills that a rear wheel drive car would go up!
