Looking for ASV Track Truck info

Hey everyone,

Great site you have here.

I'm currently looking at various grooming options for our club for next winter.

We are a small ATV Club up here in Canada and we are playing with the idea of setting up a winter trail network in our area.

Since we are a smaller size club, we are looking at starting on a small case and work our way up from there. Most of the trails that we are looking to groom are between 6 and 8 feet wide and some of the smaller trails have some twist and turns to them. We have the possibility of grooming up to 70km of trails so we are looking at various options.

I've been looking at various options available to us including a Skandic WT with a 4x8Mogule Master drag, or a Blazer Truck with 4 tracks and a bigger Mogul Master Drag like they use down in Maine or even an ATV with tracks and a small drag.

Another interesting options that I'm not very familiar with is the ASV Track Truck. I've seen a few of them for sale but I'm not very familiar with them. Some of the units I've seen even come with a blade in the front which would be a big plus for us versus the other options that we are considering.

So I figured what better place to get info on them then here LOL

So here it goes.

How reliable are these Track Truck? Maintenance is a big factor on any machinery, but if a Track Truck has been generally well maintained can we expect them to be fairly reliable?

What are problematic area and what type of problems should we look for when shopping for one of these units?

How well do they steer? I can't imagine that those front wheels alone steer very good, but I'm assuming that you can use the tracks as assistance like you can on a 2 track machine. I've also seen some unit with knobby front tires which I'm assuming would help in the steering.

How good are these units in deep snow? We don't get a lot of snow in our area and don't have a lot of hills, but we would need a machine that would allow us to break trail.

I've noticed that there seems to be a gas and an Isuzu Diesel version? Which of the 2 is more reliable and desirable?

Can you still get parts for these units from ASV and if you can how hard are they to obtain?

Some of the units I've seen come with a foldable drag on the rear. How well do these drags work?

If anyone has experience with these units and could share your comments, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
Dan

;) 1#? (I've also seen some unit with knobby front tires which I'm assuming would help in the steering) If you think them tires turn that Unit then I got a Bridge to sell you (it's call the Golden Gate Bridge) WHAT ???
Sorry it's raining here to night!
The TT are not bad if you take care of them, :myopinon: look for ones that are 1990 and up & Diesel, turbos are a plus the model 2800 are a lot nicer then the 2500 and can handle the 8' snow saver drags pertty well. Stay a way from the gas units, they are great for X-country ski with there 6' drag and are great for Ice fishing, but suck at grooming snowmobile trails.
Things to look out for when running them are in weather that is at or above 28 F. Some do tend to run hot, so what you need to do is open the covers on the engine and tie them open ( should of said! when working them hard, some may run a little on the hot side if temp is at or above 28F & if the engine covers are opened, then problem solved !
Parts have and are not a problem to get, The key to getting parts is to work with a ASV dealer that has sold TT, ASV Skid steer dealer that have never sold or worked on the TT, have no idea, and aint much help.
The ASV snow saverII fold up drag, work well, some clubs have went to a pull behind drag that pulls of the pintail hitch & some have even made a 5th wheel hitch style drag, if your just starting out then stay with the fold up,, because if you end up haveing a problem on getting up a hill then you can just fold it up and go up or just back down a spin the TT around and get out of there.

Dan's comments are right on the money. I haven't run a gas or turbo version though.

Go for the turbo version, it will give you a little more horsepower. I have owned a gas version, never again, in fact is a parts machine now. If you have steep hills, you will have to plan your grooming so that you don't climb those hills. But, they are relatively inexpensive to maintain. And as for the tires, they don't do much. :myopinon: As with any machine, find one with as few hours on it as you can for the price.

Another thing we did with our 95 TT was add a stack aircleaner-it sticks thru the cowling between the engine covers and sucks in cooler air-it REALLY helped to keep the engine (turbo diesel) running cooler.

I just bought an 86 track truck off the local snowmobile club to groom for XC skiing. Only small private area seems to work fine. Anyone have an owners or Shop Manual?? No problems yet but always good to plan ahead and keep up with maintainance

The cost is about $25.00 each for parts & owners manuals plus shipping!
You should put the plastic tubes on the drive rods this is some thing that don't show up in the parts book that came with the machine but can is some thing they added later!

I've had some luck buying parts from my local ASV Dealer, but there were some I was having trouble getting. Someone on here pointed me to these guys:

DUFFY SALES AND RENTAL
1660 US HWY 8
Barron, WI 54812
Phone: 715-537-3259

They got me the parts.

Thanks for all the info guys. Greatly appreciated.

We have pretty much ruled out a Sled and Drag option, and are currently leaning towards a Track Truck or a Blazer with Track and Groomer.

We will be on the lookout for a nice used unit in the near future.

Good point Pekabu-
Duffys in Barron is really good about parts and help with TTs. We bought ours there (a 1995 turbo) and just this year needed some small parts and were able to get them in just a couple days. They have sold a lot of TTs thru the years.

We use ours with a 8' (wide) Tidd Tech drag for XC trails.

x 2, A suv does not like ditches compared to a TT. But the suv with a good drag will lay down a nicer trail period.
