could i get your opinions on; if you had a bombardier next to a bully, both machines of equal size, and condition, which machine, if either, would be less of a machine to upkeep and maintain. i dont want to start a war, just some good old discussion. thanks.

Based on experiense solely at an XC center, the PB withstands the day in and day out (and night in and night out) use / abuse much better than a Bombardier, at least for machines up to the early 2000's. I do not have experience with the latest crop of machines, however. <edited to add> More importantly I'd look at where your parts and service will come from. If you have someone much closer who deals with Bombardier, and they are good folks that will help you out in a pinch, you'd be better off than a PB if parts and service are further away. Both machines will break, and require frequent maintenance (and the better you maintain them, they less they break). I've run two high-hour PB070's for two different ski centers, both purchased new by them. One was warmed up for a few minutes, then used, and cleaned off but left outside usually. The other one was started and warmed up for a minimum of 30 minutes, kept inside, and had a detailed check list to go through before and after use of the machine each day. Total it likely meant 1 less hour of grooming per day (the pre-check was done while the machine was warming up, then dinner:) ), but the machine was hardly ever down...when things started to seep, or crack, or act up, it got noticed and fixed rather quickly. For both of these places it was their main machine at the time. Both have moved on to different units now. |

Considering they no longer make Bombardier, I would probably go with the Pisten Bully. I have always been an avid fan of Bombardier but we are experiencing already a much harder time at getting parts. We waited for over 3 weeks for an axle last month and now the other machine is down with a broken axle. Week and a half so far waiting for the axle.

I feel that the service, maintenance, have a lot to do with the performance, reliability of the machines. Part's and tech support are everything when the cat is down. We stick with BOMBI because of the tech support and parts the machines are top of the line and great to operate.

It's a tough call. A northern club in our state uses only big PB's, and tried a BR 180 and beat it up. Not sure why they were trying it out considering everything else they use is so much bigger. Prinoth is not far from us and has been good to us. A few years ago I had heard that the PB support had been waining in the area, though we had decent support from them too, they were just much further away. I drove a Prinoth Husky recently, and it reminded me a lot of our old PB270. The controls were well placed, and the hydraulics were really smooth. Haven't heard of anyone using one yet. Many clubs in our area use Tuckers. Our BR180's have been good to us. They didn't get used too much in the last two years. Hopefully the Huskys are even better. |
