I have seen a few threads regarding ATV's used for grooming. Well we had a spare 8 x 4 MM drag so we wired up the Yamaha 700 and took it for a spin. Bottom line ..... WOW. The unit pulled effortlessly and we rode through 2'+ of powder. The unit turned on a dime and was 100% better then grooming w/ a Skandic. :scool:

It's your basic 8' x 4' Mogul Master drag. Only con is the cost of the actuator that needs to be replace every year or so. The ATV has no problem pulling a full load in 4x4 w/o diff lock.

We will continue to test and report.

Details; Yamaha Grizzly 700 EPS (electronic power steering)

Has electronic 2wd/4wd/diff lock buttons.

I was happy with it's performance.

FIRST, Turns, turns, turns!!!! point and go easy.

Q. What's the difference between a Skandic SWT and an Super Oil tanker at sea ?
A. The Oil tanker can make a turn.

I know we all add weight to the front and all kinds of fixes to help turning...still poor when pulling a load.

Price is comparable with a skandic including tracks.
Year round use.
Greater resale potential.
More comfortable.
Higher, better field of view.
A rear and yellow light can easily be temporarily mounted on the rear rack.

I made a turn around that went off trail into open woods, undriven over, made a tight loop turn without sinking or stopping.

You can load the drag to the point of spinning the tracks, just raise the drag a bit and keep going.

Unit is located in Speculator NY. One other con is the NYS DEC may not allow it to be used on State land. We will use this one on small spur trails leading to the local businesses.

But will it cut out mogules? I see all these posts with small and very large drags on you tube and everwhere else and they a pulling drags over trails that are dead flat. Big deal!!!! I would rather see a machine out wroking a trail with 1 foot dips. :myopinon:

It will do the same, if not better, job as compared to a Skandic SWT. We do not have a 6'x 8' MM drag but a bet it would pull that as well. Please realize we only use Skandics on small feeder trails that are no wider then 8'.

Our local MM dealer tested out a ATV with tracks against a Skandic. This was on a really whooped out section of trail. The ATV did better mostly because of the added weight on the front allowed for better steering. The issues I've heard is belt drive atv's burn them up, and it seems to me the guys in this area are constantly fixing their ATV's. CV Joints mostly.

In NH atv's with tracks are considered a low pressure vehicle and can run on sled trails. The issues are, 1: they don't pay or help with snowmobile trail systems. 2: Many landowners don't care, not atv's.

Screw the electric actuators. We have been using a small electric over hydraulic power unit with a single acting cylinder. When you hit the button, it goes up quick. Going down is great, and there is hardly any amp draw because it is just a dump coil to release. The motor only needs power one way. Sorry don't have any pics, the people that have them don't sit around too long. The company I work for is a Monarch distributor in Maine, and we usually have a couple power units in stock.
That Grizzly looks awesome, I just think you need a better drag.

Hydraulic is the way to go, but you work with what you got or can afford.

Typically the wiring on electric setups is botched and that causes slow electric actuators due to voltage drop.

We were grooming Sunday afternoon trails, shot, I can tell ya, much easier ride than slamming moguls on a skandic, and it turns, where and when you want it.

The drag is a Mogul Master 804, not sure what other drag is more aggressive for it's size. I've been very happy with their performance. Nearly every homemade/knockoff drag I've used sucks.

Mogul wise, cutting a 1ft mogul with a skandic or a atv, multiple passes. There just isn't the power/traction there compared to a larger machine.

We've had great success grooming in groups of three with multiple passes. It's like running a triple length drag with triple the blades. Just takes triple the equipment/operators or triple time.

We are using Tatou Tracks which we can get from our local dealer.

Totou Tracks

The test unit is located at

Village Rentals Sales and Service

In Speculator NY.

If you are local, stop by and see Rick for a demo ride / groom around the shop. He can set you up w/ everything you need at a great price.

The best in my book is the Commander by Kimpex. They have wider tracks at the rear for better floataison and also help for traction in working conditions.
