The career of rugby league’s longest-serving full-time referee Richard Silverwood is in serious doubt after he was suspended pending an investigation for alleged inappropriate behaviour towards female Rugby Football League colleagues.
Silverwood, from Mirfield, has not taken charge of a game since overseeing Hull FC’s win against Hull KR at Magic Weekend on Sunday, May 22.
The RFL investigation stems after alleged incidents at a bar in Newcastle that night.
It is Silverwood’s third suspension, having been stopped from officiating in 2009 for a breach of the RFL’s information and technology policy, and again in 2011.
The RFL has not disclosed circumstances leading to the inquiry but the YEP understands it is due to behaviour on a night out after the culmination of Magic Weekend. Silverwood’s 2009 suspension followed an alleged leak of confidential information to a trade union, while the 2011 disciplinary procedure resulted from an “off-field incident” during a game between Huddersfield and Leeds.
Meanwhile, fellow referee Sam Ansell has also been suspended pending an investigation.

A 3rd suspension. Is he RL' s answer to Steve Walsh I wonder? Hardly a way of engratiating yourself with your employers. With Phil Bentham and Robert Hicks both out injured it has given some up and coming refs the chance in Super League and by all accounts they have not let themselves down, which is great news. It's good that the excellent Ben Thaler is there to provide the experience and surely we can now regard him as our no 1 ref.
I see Sam Ansell is also suspended. If he has done something stupid what a waste of a chance as he had only recently been promoted to a full time referee.

Ben Thaler is definitely number 1 for me. James Child seems to be doing well too. Seems to be a few new refs getting a chance too.
Silverwood has come across a bit non-conformist to me of late (a la Ganson), so I am not hugely surprised of his suspension. Three strikes and out one wonders?
Noticed Phil Bentham isn't even VR this weekend.

Looks like his long term future is in the balance

Looks like his long term future is in the balance Not sure what 'summoned' means in this context. Normally an employee goes to an Employment Tribunal after making an application on the grounds of unfair dismissal, or discrimination etc. Even the employer (or respondent) is not summoned but has the opportunity to go and state its case. Either way, this would only happen after the allegation of unfair practice has taken place whereas I had understood that Silverwood had only been suspended thus far.
It could just be that he has been called before an internal disciplinary hearing by his employer which, if true, I agree doesn't sound too good for him.

First Utility Super League Match Official Richard Silverwood has called time on his 15 year refereeing career.
Silverwood is Rugby League’s longest-serving full time referee and became Super League’s youngest official when he took charge of his first game, between Salford and Halifax in 2001, at the age of 24.
He has taken charge of over 400 Super League games in his career including the 2010, 2012 and 2013 Grand Finals and World Club Challenge between Leeds Rhinos and Melbourne Storm.
Silverwood has also refereed three Challenge Cup finals, in 2006 at Twickenham and 2010 and 2012 at Wembley Stadium, as well as over 50 Challenge Cup games.
Internationally, Silverwood has a wealth of experience of Four Nations, Anzac Tests and European Championship games and refereed the 2013 World Cup Final between Australia and New Zealand at Old Trafford.
RFL Chief Operating Officer Ralph Rimmer said: “We would like to thank Richard for his contribution as a referee at the sports highest level over the past decade and a half”.
Richard Silverwood said “I have had an outstanding career as a referee. I have no regrets but I am now looking to the next chapter of my career."

Jumped before pushed? A lot of experience goes with him especially if he will not be taking up a role within the organisation. I wish him every success

Being a pretty big SL/RL fan, I have decided to invest in the League Weekly magazine - and there has been a two-week article in it about the position and situation of refereeing and the RFL infrastructure regarding it. Certainly makes for interesting reading - will see if I can get a screenshot on here later.
Can certainly see why there have been a lot of different faces out in the middle in the second half of the season.
