I've just noticed an article in today's Times - Referee Watch with former World Cup rugby union ref Jonathan Kaplan from South Africa. Comments such as 'Lacey lacked authority, killed momentum and did not let the game flow.... Jerome Garces, the best performer of the weekend' Interesting perhaps that you can contact Jonathan to discuss any refereeing issues you want to flag up and he can be reached via ratetheref.co.za (I kid you not and I've had a look already!) Perhaps we should have a whip-round to secure the services of a certain former World Cup Final ref on this site. ;-) |

I followed Kaplan's World Cup coverage on that very site last Sept/Oct and have to say that I found most of his views on referees performances very similar to my own. I think you can still access his blogs from then and, for those who follow rugby closely, I would recommend having a look if you have not done so already. Quite enlightening |

Yes, I did read it in The Times and found Kaplan's comments on Lacey and Garces (and also why he thought Nigel Owens was so good) to be pretty much in accord with my own. Strange, in a way, because I was never all that keen on Kaplan himself as a referee.

I agree totally with reflector, I used to cringe whenever kaplan and England crossed swords. I found him irratic at best, vindictive close to unfair at worst. However, his comments as an observer are worth reading. I actually thought JP Doyle wasn't as good as I've seen him domestically, Garces was good and Lacey was poor (shame as I thought he might elbow out Clancy). This week we get peyper in Paris, clouncey in Cardiff and Jackson in Rome |
