Delighted to see that the excellent Ben Thaler has been appointed to Saturday's final, his first cup final. Makes a change from the Bentham/Silverwood domination of recent years, though both are good officials themselves |

Agreed, Hendo! I wish him well. He follows - at some distance in time - other Wakefield officials Fred Lindop and Ron Gelder in receiving this honour. |

Pleased that Ben Thaler gets a look in. Considering there are so few to choose from, the sport is fortunate to have at least three who could be trusted with this appointment. Thanks to JCFC for reminding me of Fred Lindop who was my favourite referee from the days when there used to be a live Rugby League game (or at least only the second half if I remember correctly) on BBC2 on a Tuesday evening, which gave rise to my interest in the sport. I always thought that Fred was from York though but one thing I do recall for certain was that he only had one kidney! Funny the strange things that do spring to mind. I would say Ben has been the top performing official this season and could end up with the Grand Final as well. Think Phil Bentham is still struggling with injury, the other guys have been reading 2 games over a weekend period recently |

Indeed. Was delighted Ben was appointed for the CC Final, and thought he had a great game. I suppose there is now an extra 'big game' now - as well as the Grand Final, there's the 4th v 5th 'million pound game' from the Super 8's Qualifiers. Richard Silverwood will get one (Grand Final IMO) and Phil Bentham the other (Million Pound Game IMO). Aged 39 and 43 respectively, they have potential to be around for a few years yet. Incidentally, Ben Thaler is 34. James Child is 32. Ben's first SL game was in 2005 (James 2009) - I love the way the RFL aren't scared to chuck them at the deep end, and to be fair they always do well - there has to be a reason for that, which must be the training and support from the RFL. Edit - just seen post querying Phil's injury, I just assumed he hadn't been on TV as he's done VR games; Ben will likely get the Million Pound game if Phil isn't fit. Phil Bentham has not appeared in the super 8s on field and I see is video ref again in the latest round of appointments, so injury seems quite prolonged. I see the Warrington v Hull super 8 game this weekend will be refereed by C Kendall, a new name to me I have to admit |

Further to this, I have just seen a picture of the R F L referees on a jolly up Catbells in the Lake District which you can google just by using these words. If you do you will se that Phil's left arm is bandaged, so mystery solved to a degree but still not sure if it's an accident or planned op |

Just seen Joe Cobb replacing injured Richard Silverwood in Bradford game in Super 8s tomorrow. Don't know how serious the injury is, but if it's long term the end of season appointments will be interesting. |

Silverwood and Bentham not on the pitch this week again. Cas v Saints - Thaler Wigan v Hull - Child Catalan v Leeds - Hicks Hudd v Warr - Child ---------------------------- KR v Bradford - Thaler Wakey v Widnes - Cobb 'Fax v Leigh - Kendall Salford v Sheffield - Hewer That's all they have to play with at the moment. They will be snookered if Ben Thaler gets injured - that's the danger of having such a small pool. |

Just seen on Silverwood's Twitter, he's got a torn quad. Guess that's his season over? Not good news for the RFL. |

James Child could be getting some important matches in the next few weeks with Silverwood and Bentham both out. |

Absolutely. Ben Thaler and James Child going to be extremely busy with Super 8s and the Super 8s Qualifiers. Just hope they don't burn themselves out and get injured otherwise Steve Ganson and Stuart Cummings will be coming out of retirement! |

Indeed. Silverwood and Bentham reserve officials and video ref in the opposite fixture. Still no closer to knowing who's going to get the grand final. Given Silverwood and Bentham haven't had a big SL game in a few weeks I'm not sure the RFL will put them on the grand final. Ben Thaler would be my choice, and IMO he's deserved and earned it. I'd be pretty peeved if I was Thaler and Silverwood or Bentham got it. |

Certainly for the last few years that I have been watching the Grand Final referee also did one of the semis, so I would go with Ben Thaler |

Ben Thaler to referee final. :cheer: :cheer: Robert Hucks reserve ref with James Child on the line and both Bentham and Silverwood as video refs. Excellent appointment and thoroughly deserved. Let's hop he has a cracker. |

You forgot to mention the legend that is Tony Martin as the other TJ Tony was the TJ in the 2000 World Cup Final. Talk about longevity at the highest level. |

The RFL got that absolutely spot on IMO. Ben's had the best season, and had the big games during the Super8s while RS and PB injured. RH and JC had decent seasons so get recognition too whilst RS and PB do an important job in the car park truck. And yes, great to see Tony Martin on the other line too. Very happy with that appointment. |

Good appointments all round and good to see that at least one sport (and perhaps the only one of our leading sports?) appoints on merit. |

I noticed these appointments in the paper this morning and offer my congrats to all concerned. However two video refs....? :'( What happens if they disagree? Does it go on majority verdict with the match ref making up the threesome? A bit far-fetched if you ask me ^o) |
