This weekend saw the quarter finals of the European Rugby competitions - I did not see more than highlights of Toulon's victory over Wasps or Clermont's murdering of Northampton so cannot comment on the Irish pair (although Wasps were moaning about a player who did not receive a 'blatant' yellow card from Clancy) Garces in Dublin looked back to his best - not an overly difficult game for this stage of the competition but what he did he did very well. Owens in Paris did well, there were a few missed penalties in the first half but as the pressure of the game mounted and players started looking for easy offences he stood up to all that was thrown at him and having warned Racing about 'sealing off' penalised them as the clock went red, Marcello Bosch did the rest. I think both Garces and Owens will end up refereeing the finals this year. In terms of the upcoming semi finals I would expect to see Barnes and Clancy for the Champions Cup and Owens and Lacey/Poite for the Challenge Cup. |

3 right on the semi appointments - Barnes (with Owens and garner), Clancy (with hodges and Philips) get the champions cup matches, Lacey with French assistants gets one challenge cup, the 2nd to JP Doyle, despite having the dragons last weekend |
