In 2011 there were 10 referees used, reffing 4 games each in the group stages. Of those 10 we have lost Rolland, Lawrence, Walsh, Kaplan and Pearson. Leaving the elite group as Owens, Clancy, Barnes, Poite and Joubert. Add in Garces and Peyper and you have the bones of the possible group of referees. Those used in the 6 nations included JP Doyle, Jackson, Pollock and Gauzerre. I can imagine all these getting games, some as referee others as assistants. My concern is the lack of experience and big match referees. Owens, Joubert and Barnes would be my top 3 with Garces ahead of Poite. |

I don't watch a lot of rugby, but Jaco Peyper has always impressed me when I've seen him - so I'd like him to get some bigger games. |

Peyper is definitely number 2 in the southern hemisphere and so should be guaranteed some of the bigger games. |

I have personally never been overly impressed with Peyper but we all see different things in different refs. RCG - your list omits John Lacey who I rate much more highly than Clancy and would love to see take over the role of Ireland's no. 1. A good solid dependable ref whenever I have seen him. I think your list is not far wrong. I am sure all the refs on the Elite category will be there but whether they all get 4 group games to begin is debatable. I feel the gap between the top 3 or 4 refs and the rest is bigger than last time. Providing Wales don't reach the final and assuming that hell doesn't freeze over, its very hard to see past Nigel Owens for the final. Its no coincidence that 4 of the greatest Test matches in the last 18 months, inc last weekend at Twickenham, had him in charge. Having said that Joubert came into his own at the last WC, very much no 2 to Kaplan before it began. The WC committee made it clear that appointments would be on merit and (sadly, the Final apart) he had an excellent tournament, picking up both a quarter and a semi final in addition to the final, quite some achievement. if they follow the same pattern this year then I can see a small handful of the top refs being very busy in the final stages. |

Incidentally who does anyone see as taking over from Walsh as Australia's no 1? I have always been impressed by Angus Gardner, so would not be surprised to see him pushed into the limelight pretty quickly. Nobody else to be honest springs readily to mind |

I knew I'd missed one out (oops) and I concur that Johnny as he seems to prefer being called is better than Clancy. Gardner has done well in Oz and in most of his Super rugby games but has very little international experience, I am sure him or Leckie will be there as assistant referees at the very least along with Pastrana, Anselmi, Pearce, Philips, Hodges etc |
