Who will ref the Heineken Semis?

The 2 European semis are: Saracens vs Clermont and Toulon vs Munster - but who will officiate?

The split of the 2 French teams will mean no Garces or Poite. This, you would think, leaves Owens, Rolland and Barnes (with Clancy as an outside)

Nigel Owens refereed Munster (and then has them this week in the RABO) so may tip him towards Saracens, although this is the only match an Irish referee could take.

Wayne Barnes had Toulon in the Quarters, but obviously can't do the Sarries game.

The sentimental part of me would like to see Rolland saved for the final but I think he may do the first semi (despite having Clermont in the quarters) and that Waynes Barnes will be back to the south of France for the second.

In the Challenge Cup with 2 all English ties the coast is clear for any of the refs. I think Garces and Poite may both be used and there's always the option of a top ref not used in the HEC semis

As much as I would love to see Rolland get the final for similar reasons, there is no guarantee because of Munster being in the semis.

My gut feeling is that they will play it safe - Rolland for the Sarries game and Barnes for Toulon. Owens is not a problem as no Welsh team left. So depending on who gets through could be any of these for the final, or indeed either of the Frenchmen in the (unlikely) happening of no there being no French team in the final.

As regards the Amlin Cup, they might give one of these to Clancy or (preferably) John Lacey and one to a Frenchman. Again, there are endless possibilities for the Final apart from an Englishman. If an Irish club in the main final, may be a chance to give this final to Rolland

Owens for the Saracens game (with Rolland as senior touch judge incidentally), Barnes for Toulon

Clancy and Poite get the Amlin semis

hI wonder if they will now give it to Rolland, which would be a great way to bow out. He has had it twice before, 2004 and last year, but Owens has already had it 3 times (inc on consecutive occasions) so there is a precedence. With it being an Anglo-French final the options are surely limited to one of these 2 as Clancy is :poo:

As regards the Amlin I have a sneaking feeling that Jerome Garces could get it as Poite did one of the semis.

So, here goes, for what its worth -

Heineken - Alain Rolland as ref, with Clancy and John Lacey as touch judges

Amlin - Jerome Garces as ref, with Poite and Pascale Gauzere as assistants

Did you have a sneaky peek at planetrugby or was it a feeling in your waters? Rolland with Chancy and Owens (your only mistake) for the Heineken Cup and the French Trio for the Amlin. Top punditry Hendo. I doff my cap accordingly

No RCG, never saw the Planet Rugby site; in fact just had a look now and it seems as though the news was only announced at 7pm.

Great appointments though, lovely way for Rolland  to end his distinguished career and a good way for Garces :tu: to end what I feel for him has been a very positive season in which he has continued to challenge Poite for the role as France's no. 1

Well that's put the kiss of death on both of them I fear! :ouch:
