6 Nations - Weekend 4

Overall not a bad weekend for the officials. One thing that did impress me were they were all consistent within their own games, ensuring similar offences went punished or unpunished as appropriate.

Romain Poite, in my opinion, did a decent enough job at Twickenham. His tolerance at scrum time was tested to the full and after warnings, despatched the Welsh prop to the bin. Thought Hartley was fortunate not to follow for repeated offences. Poite manages games in a quieter manner than some but is able to get his point across. I liked his assertiveness on the decisions referred to the TMO, once he had seen them again on the screen. Even Mr Walsh didn't over involve himself!

Chris Pollock continues to improve, but isn't quite there yet. I don't think he did a whole lot wrong but just doesn't fill me with complete confidence. He just couldn't seem to get to grips with what was happening in the scrums and this slowed the game down no end. Given time, I think he will be a decent ref.

Nigel Owens in Dublin was magnificent. I know we've said it before but he managed the game and the occasion from start to finish. Constant communication prevented offences from taking place and he only penalised when necessary. Didn't over react to the shenanigans on the 2nd half and was always in the right place at the right time. Guscott tried to say it was an easy game to referee - I would argue the players made it easy as they knew what they could and couldn't get away with. Nice to see Allain Rolland go across and shake O'Driscolls hand on his substitution.

As ever RCG, I wouldn't disagree with anything you have said, a really good assessment of the weekend's officiating.

Whoops, sent too soon. Try again ...............

As ever RCG, I wouldn't disagree with anything you have said, a really good assessment of the weekend's officiating.

When watching the magnificent Nigel Owens the one word that kept coming to mind with me too was "managing". This is the key - he manages the game from start to finish and its no coincidence I feel that the scrums in games he refs are far less shambolic then in most of the other games we see. He has the knack, control, personality, respect - call it what you will - to get the best out of the forwards and ensure it is not the lottery we so very often have to endure. Class.

Poite and Pollock both did ok as you say.

Overall I would say not a bad 6 nations for the refs this season, which is good to see.

And so roll on the final weekend and bon chance! to Messrs Gauzere and Garces (Italy v England and Wales v Scotland respectively) and heaven help us all with Mr Walsh in charge of a potential Championship decider yet again, with France v Ireland.

Seems there is a feeling in Wales that Monsieur Poite's interpretation at scrum time was a little off. My over riding view of that was, maybe BUT he did warn the prop twice before sending him to the bin
