And so to weekend 2 of this year's 6 Nations - and I have to say I was underwhelmed by the quality of the rugby in, admittedly, trying circumstances. Wales failed to show up in Dublin and when they did, seemed to commit offence after offence. Was a good example of how a team under pressure commits the majority of offences. I thought Wayne Barnes managed the game well, got exasperated on the number of times he had to penalise Wales but generally tried to communicate his way through it. I do feel the petulant Mike Phillips should have had 10 minutes on the naughty step, as he was warned on more than one occassion. Jerome Garces did well in Edinburgh, in what ended up a very one sided game. I thought he tried to make allowances for the dodgy underfoot conditions but penalised when he had to. He look much more confident that he used to, although does still give the impression that a strong wind would blow him over! Jaco Peyper did OK in Paris - the first half was so error strewn that it was inevitable the whistle would be blown lots. The kickers did their best to keep the score as low as possible. The French then blew the Italians away at the start of the second half. I cannot quite work out how either pack got so wound up in the last 10 minutes that we ended up with 2 reds - good involvement from Craig Joubert, the more senior referee, to insist on reds rather than yellows |

As ever a good review from RCG. I suppose anyone, whoever they may be, is going to be up against it in the light of the wonderful masterclass from Nigel Owens in week 1. Because of that, while this weekends refs did ok, I couldn't help but find myself comparing them to Owens and finding them as a result coming up short. I thought Barnes was the best of the 3; like Owens he explains himself clearly and forcefully, the players know exactly where they stand even if the don't necessarily agree. (Is it me or does the streak of arrogance which Barnes used to often convey - rightly or wrongly - seem to have diminished considerably?) Garces has the makings of an excellent ref; I thought he allowed for the conditions well but even then felt was a bit "picky" at times. Reminds me of Joel Dume at his best Peyper I am not sure of; he strutted around giving penalty after penalty which disrupted the flow, especially in the first half, and while the purists would say he was right to do so I just felt he was a bit overly fussy. The sendings off were unfortunate; I feel he was going to settle for yellows at best until Joubert intervened and almost insisted on red. Personally feel that yellows would have sufficed but who am I to say. Not fully convinced; did ok but ......... Roll on week 3 and Messrs Rolland (his final Test), Walsh (wish it were his last!) and Joubert (again) Incidentally if it goes to the wire as some are already suggesting with a France v Ireland championship deciding match, then heaven help us all (as in Wales v England last year) cos its Steve Walsh yet again! |
