Another excellent site identifying who was in charge of particular games is this Ipswich Town one:

http://www.tmwmtt.com/sql/seasons.phtml
Thank you. I have added that one into the opening post.
Thank you. However this seems to be accessible only via the home page and by way of subscription, thus perhaps limiting its interest only to Ipswich supporters, of which I think we have at least one on this site ;-)

Some of the suggested sites on this thread no longer seem accessible, including Man Utd, which is imo a pity. The best one available is the Liverpool site which I have found v useful when trying to access refs for Liverpool games (home and away) over the years.
The Ipswich site HAS changed since I last looked a few months back but I've just managed to get in via the 'Matches' link on the homepage and then selecting a season from the drop down box. Hope this is useful.

Ray
Thanks, that's better!

bmb - so Ipswich have one more supporter on this site than AFCB and two more than Crewe and Crystal Palace?

Do we actually know which club is best supported on this site? Not the ever unlucky club from North London by any chance? I think we need to know :sherlock: ;-)

Seems to be a fair few West Brom & Spurs fans about, Man City & Sunderland must be quite high on the list as well. I'd say all of the PL clubs are covered, a high number of the Championship clubs are covered and a sprinkling of lower league club fans as well. Nice mix really as we get views across all 4 leagues. Then there are the Scottish fans (thank you to them for not rubbing in last night's result...) and a few foreign fans as well. Oh and we mustn't forget the 1 fan of Budapest Honvéd!!! :P

Here is another good stats site, this one for Colchester United:

http://www.coludata.co.uk/index.php

From this homepage, click on 'Matches' then 'All matches'. At this point, there is a season selector drop down box. In some earlier seasons, referee data is not always available for certain games, e.g. only 19 of CUFC's 23 home games list the ref.

Nevertheless, it is more informative than the majority I've seen, with the exception of those already mentioned on this post.

Thank you, Ray ; what a very informative and constructive site !. Just had a quick tour of the 1968-69 season and there are some very familiar names appearing. In addition to the referees, I had forgotten that Tony Macedo (born in Gibraltar), a famous English goalkeeper of the 60s with Fulham (never to win a full cap), was just ending his second spell at Colchester together with the ex-Spurs winger Terry Dyson. Macedo's England rivals during his long 50s-60s career were the likes of Gordon Banks, Eddie Hopkinson, Colin MacDonald, Ron Springett and the Sheffield United 'keeper whose name temporarily escapes me ! Apologies offtopic :innocent:

I look forward to revisiting this intriguing site, many thanks for the information !. :) :cheer:

P.S. Alan Hodgkinson was the SU 'keeper............ Hopkinson and Hodgkinson !.

I think that this was Paul Robinson and I seem to recall that he was from Derbyshire, possibly Derby itself or even Chesterfield.

I think I am on safe ground offering a criticism here, gentlemen. Does it irritate you, as it does me, that in researching data that many of us seem keen on, that you will find a website that looks superb, only to find that the ref details are completely ignored? I know I am a grumpy old man but.... :censored:

I've had a further dig on the Colchester site looking at the 1969-1970 season and given the distant time period it caters well for referee details with the great majority being listed. As Colchester were a Division 4 team it also means that many of the referee names are less familiar including quite a few who proceeded no further than the supplementary list.

It's also remarkable to see some of the travelling the referees had to do with Layer Road visited by north east referees Nathaniel Graham and Jack Quinn - Newbiggin in Northumberland down to Colchester by the former must have been one of the longest and most arduous journeys! Gerry Jones of Lancaster also made the trip alongside referees from other northern locations. Taking charge of the match at Aldershot was Bill Hall of Preston. The Essex derby games with Southend went to Ken Burns and Wakefield's George Hartley.

That would be PJ Robinson of Belper. He had retired a few years before this match so Paul Robinson of Hull does seem to be our man for the Burnley game.

Agreed, thank you, and probably time to switch this particular subject to I Spy Old Refs under a new or existing heading. I've already mentioned a Mr B S Setchell refereeing Crewe v Colchester under 'Crewe Programmes'.

Thank you, I had wondered where this had got to!

Ref & Stats is not used v often but is a useful thread for nerds like me to access. I note that the previous entry on this thread (my entry!) was in April 2015 which would have now put it on page 11 or 12 of General Discussion, hence my inability to find it recently.

Memo to Admin - is it possible to restore R & S to a separate heading towards the top of General Discussion rather than just having it within the main body of GD threads and thus getting lost again? Hope you see what I mean, thanks
