Condolences to his family. What a wonderful man and a superb ambassador for English refereeing and football in general.

Big Jack was my 'teen idol' when I passed as a Class 3 in 1970 in Birmingham County FA. I had the pleasure of meeting him several times as my career developed and 'ran a line' for him at an international summer youth tournament in Birmingham in the mid-70s.

Rest in peace Jack........ you will always be fondly remembered !

Oh how sad. Probably the first referee I really remember, and the person who got me liking refs to start with! I was only 5/6 when he refereed the WC but still remember it.

RIP Jack, the world of refereeing has lost a real good un. Thoughts and prayers with his family and loved ones, his memory will always live on.

Had the pleasure of meeting him on numerous occassions. A delightful man with time for anyone and everyone.

Football and refereeing in particular, has lost a true gentleman.

They've just heard the news at the Stadium of Light..."

Yes, very sad news. We can always argue about how he would compare with referees of today but, without any doubt, he was the finest referee of his generation and although the game is different today, I am sure his accomplished man management skills would have been an asset to officials of any era.

Many have felt that it was short sighted in the extreme not to have found him a role in the FA to either manage or have a key role in the development of referees after he reached the then compulsory retirement age. Instead he concentrated on his career as a master butcher but how sad that the game never had the benefit of all his skills and experience. I recall him being interviewed some years ago and saying that he would have loved to have had the opportunity but the call never came. What a waste.

He will never be forgotten, i recall the stories my Father tells he watched him on many games and always said he took no nonsense from any player.

Condolences to his family at this sad time.

RIP Jack Taylor

A great shame. Jack is one of the few referees who have become a household name. Some of those famous officials have divided opinion but he is one of a select number who have been universally well-regarded. The word "legend" is over-used but he deserves that title. RIP Jack and condolences to his family and friends.

What a wonderful definition of 'a football legend'..... I made my original post as number2 on this thread and JKT would be so humbled, and proud, to know that so many referees are remembering him tonight.

A great man with more humility than any other referee I have ever met. Jack would always find time for a word and his presence alone left some people in awe.
I had the pleasure of meeting Jack on many occasions in a football environment and I can honestly say he was afforded more respect than any other referee in this country.
Condolences to Jack's family.
RIP Jack.

Perhaps the most over used and debased word in sporting parlance is "legend" but Jack Taylor provides the definition and the benchmark when it comes to football officiating. A man of immense stature and virtue. We mourn his passing.
