I may stir up a hornet's nest or I may not...but I thought Cakir was immense tonight...it was the performance of the tournament so far imho...just shading Howard Webb. He was not at all fazed or intimidated by the extremely partisan but well behaved home crowd...what an atmosphere btw well done Kiev... He missed virtually nothing, cautioned appropriately, remained calm, controlled and unflustered throughout. I absolutely loved the way he added a further 90 seconds onto the added w3 minutes for he Ukranian attacker's theatrics and the extra substitution...so many refs don't... and the way he hurried the departing Ukranian off the pitch, and refused to yield to the increasingly loud whistles of the desperate home fans screaming at him to blow the final whistle. Great stuff, and showed just how reffing a host nation should be done. Very, very impressive imo and a dark horse for the final if he continues in this vein. |

Can't comment on anything else yet, as I've not seen the whole performance. However, I wonder whether this has been brought to light and commented on in the referees' workshops because Kuipers, quite rightly, added extra time to the stoppage time in his game yesterday too. As you say, the right thing to do but it's not something we've been familiar with Europeans referees doing in recent years. |

Hey JHA_LFA..We're singing off the same page of the hymn sheet at last lol As you mention, I really hope it has been emphasised in the refs workshops...it appears it might have done if both Kuipers and Cakir added on further time than was shown on the board. It really does annoy me, especially when there is only one goal in a game, when during added time, in order to "run down the clock" a fancy phrase for timewasting imho, the winning team will suddenly decide to throw on a sub, or even two, while the departing players amble off with all the urgency of a sulky schookid dragging their heels, or there is a somewhat dubious injury or an alarmingly exaggerated attack of cramp requiring the physio's urgent attention etc...yet the ref doesn't add any more than the time that the FO showed in the first place. Let's hope what we have seen so far continues to be implemented. BTW hope you enjoy the game. It is a bit of a slow burner but the second half was compelling stuff. |

Never thought I'd say this but I agree with both notquitearef and JAH_LFA (and of course babyref, too). This business of substituting players in the last few minutes of a game is one of my biggest irritations in football. So much so, personally I would ban the substitution of any player after, say, 85 minutes of any game (except during extra time if played). As that is unlikely to ever happen, ensuring that referees add on sufficient added time, as did Cakir last night, is much to be welcomed. |

Cakir has definitely been the most impressive official so far, very competent performance last night, missed nothing and punished correctly. |
