Obviously some issues with managing the referees up here at the moment. Two of our better referees quit within six weeks of each other and neither have been getting the SPL games they deserve.

Something clearly wrong in Scottish refereeing circles when guys like Steve Conroy and Charlie Richmond are throwing in the towel. These are experienced well liked referees who give you an honest performance week in week out. As Tweed rightly says they have both been overlooked for SPL games this season, as has the equally capable Mike Tumilty, while the untouchable Craig Thomson staggers along from one blunder to another. Something not right.......

Craig Thomson " staggers from one blunder to another". ... Yeah that will be why he is going to Euro 2012 and consistently performs well in the 'big games'

The Sunday Mail named another few referees yesterday who they claim are under pressure to quit! David Somers, Brian Winter and Frank McDermott.

As much as I liked Conroy as a referee, he did seem to take the 'easy' option on a few occasions by not sending off players when he should have. However this was his last season as the SFA still enforce the retiral age of 45 and is also David Somers last season as well!

However Richmond was prone to many a high profile error!!!!!

Brian Winter is not under pressure to quit, Brian is choosing to retire 2 years early due to problems with his knees.

Steve was not due to retire at the end of the season as the retiral age for senior referees and assistants is 47.

The retiral age is likely to go completely not come down to 45

Does he? I can think of at least three blunders in the last month.
1. Incorrect penalty and red card in Europa League match between Twente Eschede and AZ Alkmaar.
2. Incorrectly awarding corner in Scottish Cup (his decision not the AR) tie between Motherwell and Aberdeen that led to opening goal.
3. Sending Motherwell manager to the stand in same game,a decision later overturned on appeal.

In the past he has admitted to sending a Celtic player off in error during an Old Firm game at Ibrox, and there was a fast track enquiry set up to look at his performance and errors during an Aberdeen v Hibs match at Pittodrie in December. A performance described as a shambles.

I am not full of hope for Mr Thomson covering Scottish refereeing in glory at Euro 2012 in the summer.

jazza8266, to be fair to him, if we make comparisons to a refereeing 'great', Collina had his fair share of troubles in his country and regularly made 'errors' but performed well internationally.

I'll stick up for Craig Thomson a bit here as I think he is a top notch referee. Jazza like me is a Motherwell fan and sadly three of the last four times we've had him he has made a complete rick against us thugh in fairness about that corner decision he did follow his assistant's call - his assistant who had a much better view. All that said I think Collum and Murray are better than him.

Clancy had his first game at the weekend and the reports I am reading suggest he was a bit nitpicky but all right. There was a big penalty call in that game and the papers suggest it was a stonewaller that he didn't give but having watched it back I think the Inverness player got the ball and it was a good tackle. Motherwell had him in the cup against Queens Park and he was very impressive.

I actually think the SFA have got into bringing the young guys on to give them a chance of FIFA and UEFA appointments and to do that some of the guys at the top end of the middle order whose chances with UEFA and FIFA have passed have been neglected. But it just shows guys in the last couple of seasons are not motivated by Alloa v Elgin and they need to remember to give them their share of SPL games or their invaluable experience will be lost to the likes of Kevin Clancy and the other three guys who have had their first SPL games in the last couple of weeks (Craig Charleston, Brian Colvin and John Beaton being the other three).
