Wayne Barnes, Dave Pearson and Bryce Lawrence all demoted from Elite list, leaving England with no representative on the list

Full list of 9 is:

The nine elite: George Clancy, Jérôme Garcès, Craig Joubert, Nigel Owens, Jaco Peyper, Chris Pollock, Romain Poite, Alain Rolland and Steve Walsh.

Garces joins Poite so 2 Frenchmen, Clancy and Rolland retained plus Nigel Owens to complete the Northern 5. Jaco Peyper promoted from South Africa, along with Chris Pollock of NZ and the ever green Steve Walsh, completing the Southern 4

I find that absolutely staggering!

If you are going to rip the list apart like that, how on earth can you still have a place for the likes of Clancy and Walsh??

Looks like Kaplan has gone too, unless I have missed that somewhere along the line in the past

What does it say too about the state of English refereeing? Pearson I have often had my doubts about (though he did well in the France v Ireland game) but Wayne Barnes seemed to be held in great esteem. How the mighty fall! I wonder if this might result in Barnes taking up his law career again

Goodbye and good riddance to Lawrence - he was awful

I don't think too many will miss Mr O'Brien. I too missed that Kaplan had been dropped. Reading the rugby blogs it would seem Wayne Barnes' performance at the World Cup contributed to his demise (didn't he ref the 3/4 play off though?)

I struggle to see how Kayper comes from almost nowhere to be placed in the Elite list

Looking further into England's refereeing I would guess the next big hope is Luke Pearce, currently reffing on the 7s series, as I personally dont think Andrew Small is good enough and others on the Premiership seem the wrong age to be 'pushed' (with possible exception of JP Doyle)

Can't believe Clancy has been kept over Barnes and Kaplan.

All I can say is F**k a duck!

I'm not long back from NZ where even the most ardent Kiwi admitted that he had a good RWC - though they still haven't forgiven him for Cardiff!

Clancy.......are u kidding?

I too am amazed at Barnes, although personally I have never liked his style I always thought he was extremely well regarded by the powers that be. Clancy is something of a joke; I guess he must have some very powerful and partisan backers because surely his performances don't merit his inclusion in the Elite List

Interesting to note that the panel set up to oversee referee appointments in the foreseeable future includes 4 ex international refs, none of whom I feel could claim to have been regarded as especially outstanding.

Tappe Henning of SA who was dropped fo the 2003 WC after a series of poor games - 21 internationals reffed
Donal Courtney of Ireland - very hit and miss, never seemed to be comfortable - 18 internationals
Clayton Thomas of Wales - ok, nothing special, went to one wc - 15 internationals
Lyndon Bray of NZ - briefly an international ref but prone to errors - 7 internationals

So just over 60 internationals between them.

I am not saying that mediocre refs do not make excellent administrators but I find it slightly strange that the panel tasked with such a responsibility includes no real quality or big names. I wonder on what basis they have been selected

Reading the IRB statement more closely it seems that the Elite panel is going to be very fluid over the coming months in the build up to 2015, with refs coming and going depending on performance, so the make up may be very different in 6/12 months time and the likes of Barnes may be back with hopefully turkeys such as Clancy coming off.

And it seems to suggest that they are looking for a more permanent replacement for O'Brien in the longer term - Kaplan maybe?? Just a thought

Wow can not believe the changes. the addition of refs is not a problem for me BUT the demotion to a new second tier (?) for the likes of Barnes and Kaplin is bizarre. Based on WC 2011 appointments these demotions are bizarre to say the least. Surprisingly the South African site is really quiet on the issue and they are pretty vocal when they think they are hard done by. eg when Kaplin was not appointed to the 6 nations.

On another note it is scary and imho a poor reflection on the IRB that they can only find 9 refs to make their elite panel of refs.
