Hmm. Clattenburg, Beck and Child were all present for Villa's last home game. The usual suspects out in force, nothing too surprising in this week's batch....except of course Clattenburg doing Everton! (as readingfan mentions below) Edited by Life of Riley, January 9, 2012, 5:16 pm.

Clattenburg on an Everton game!!! Wow, that's been a while - nearly 4 and a half years? And in the same week Atkinson gets them again. Interesting. (Good news is there's about 6 weeks after this until the Merseyside derby so...!) Good tv games for Oliver and Atkinson. A little surprised by the appointments of Walton and Foy, and to a lesser extent Dowd and Webb. |

And Webb - this is his first Liverpool game of the season. Wouldn't be surprised to see his second a fortnight later.... |

Absolute bloody rubbish - I refer you all the the APPOINTMENTS thread in General Discussion when we all expressed our views on who deserved games this week - and one which proves once and for all that there is no accountability whatsoever within the FA. NONE. Full stop. Grandad - disgraceful, lost control of the Wolves v Chelsea game and FAILED to send Lampard off but gets a game Dowd - wrong dismissal in the Utd v Wolves game but gets another go here Foy - dreadful performance yesterday but gets a game here Webb - awful pen decision in the Sunderalnd v Everton game and some other less than acceptable performances over the holiday but gets his obligatory game Where oh where is the accountability? Do those making these appointments live in some kind of bubble in which they never use their own eyes and ears to see the awful performances being dished out? Do they take any account whatsoever of what the Assessors say? Do the Assessors have any influence whatsoever because I very much doubt it. Its all a complete load of horse s***. |

As normal I agree with Hendo - its as if the referees are pulled out of a hat at random with no consideration of prior performance - the transparency, credibility and the accountability of PGMOL is poor at best and these appointments make little sense. Halsey...excellent over the festive period for instance, banished to 4O duty at the Hawthorns yet the usual suspects Walton, Atkinson, Webb and Foy get their weekly runouts. Can someone please tell me how Peter Walton manages to secure the games that he does? |

Agree about Walton. Halsey in the Tottenham v West Brom match was far from excellent!! |

Take away every referee who has made a mistake... who are you going to appoint then? Then what are you going to do when they make a mistake? And then the next lot? |

Man U v Bolton won't be an easy game for Grandad it being a local derby.. Taylor for us at Ewood and Foy, Oliver and Atkinson on the tele. Friend and Moss in the football league. |

Friend and Halsey, two refs who have had relatively quiet games recently (no controversies), are nowhere to be seen, yet Foy, Walton Webb and Dowd are all given good games in the PL!!! How does it work?? Anyway, will be nice to see Oliver's shiny new FIFA badge on telly on Sunday!!! |

Quite agree, as with steve_26's post earlier in this thread. Its a complete lottery, if your face fits you are guaranteed a game even if you under-perform or turn out dross. Was looking at some of the marks awarded over the festive period by those papers who mark refs and some very interesting reading which reflects the views of the learned posters on this site rather than the blinkered views of those responsible for the PL appointments. For example - The best marks on Boxing Day/27th were Attwell (WBA v Everton) and Halsey (chelsea v Villa) with 8 Grandad averaged 3/10 for Wolves v Chelsea, Dowd 5/10 for Utd v Wolves, as did Webb for Sunderland v Everton, Mason (Blackburn v Stoke) and Probert for Newcastle v Liverpool Most of the rest were in the 6/10 or 7/10 bracket. I have just noticed too that Ledger is in the PL at Utd v Bolton despite his c**k up in the last min of Sunderland v City when he missed an offside. I wonder if any tight offsides this weekend might favour the home side or the visitors!!?? And another prediction; I fear that despite his relatively poor season, Dowd is being groomed for the FA Cup Final, which like Atkinson's last year would be made on favouritism rather than merit. You read it here first. |

Can't argue with Martin Atkinson I suppose. I'm sure I will though when I get back from the DW Stadium in the early hours of Tuesday morning. |

If I were Mancini I'd think twice about playing Balotelli. |
