These were the 10 who handled the Six Nations games earlier this year, so no surprise and nobody deemed bad enough to be overlooked. Feel a bit sorry for the likes of Alan Lewis of Ireland, who seems to have been overlooked in favour of George Clancy (not sure Clancy is better TBH but who am I to say). As useless as Stuart Dickinson is, and having been to 3 world Cups already, I feel he will be gutted to have been replaced as Australia's no. 1 by Steve Walsh, the ex New Zealander and RU bad boy, who seems to have more of a charmed life than a cat. Perhaps shows up the dearth of class in Australia than anything else. Pearson, Joubert and Lawrence have never really impressed me, so that leaves Owens, Rolland, Poite, Barnes and Kaplan as the top refs (though Owens, Poite and Kaplan all had poor games in the 6 Nations). To me, a mix of good quality and experience on the one hand together with some lightweights on the other. Interesting to see Garces of France - a real prospect for the future - and Munroe of NZ also earmarked as reserve refs in case of injury as well as being touch judges. |

Have just read too that, although the group appointments have not yet been made, Clancy has already been appointed to the opening game between NZ and Tonga! Always an important game, to set the standards as it were, so a surprise to give it to a World Cup novice who is IMHO lucky to be going. It will be his first WC, as well as the first one for Lawrence, Poite and Joubert too. At the knockout stages the total compliment of 21 (10 refs, 7 touch judges and 4 TMO) will be redueced to 10. With 48 games, its going to be a hectic few weeks for many of those there. Good luck to them! |

I fully endorse Hendo's first reply. I also think that Poite is rather "flaky" - at least I thought so when I saw him at the Calcutta Cup match. As a Welshman I am a little concerned about Nigel Owens. I believe he may be stale as he has seen the same Welsh clubs so often in the Magners League in recent seasons. (It was encouraging to see him at The Saracens last week) As for Mr Walsh ....... wayward, erratic but really good on his day; its now down to him! Kaplan for the Final but, if SA are there and England are not, I go for Wayne Barnes. |

Personally my selection would have been 1. Nigel Owens (Wales) 2. Jonathan Kaplan (SA) 3. Mark Lawrence (SA) 4. Bryce Lawrence (New Zealand) 5. Stuart Dickinson (Australia) 6. Romain Poite (France) 7. Steve Walsh (Australia/New Zealand or whatever country he supposed to be from nowdays! ;) 8. Alain Rolland (Ireland) 9. Wayne Barnes (England) 10. George Clancy(Ireland) With either Nigel Owens or Wayne Barnes handling the Final |

I have never been impressed by Clancy and can never really fathom why he has got on so well. Walsh certainly lives a charmed life. What is really noticeable is the complete absence of Scottish officials. There have been some very good Scottish referees in the past...I wonder what has gone wrong ? |

Agreed. Scotland dont seem to have had a grade 1 ref for some seasons now. If I recall correctly their last 2 were Rob Dickson and Ian Ramage, neither of whom did very much, and you have to go back to the 90s for the likes of Jim Fleming and Ken McCartney. In recent years the Changeleng brothers have been touch judges but one gave up to concentrate on his teaching and the other seems to have been overlooked for the World Cup. Peter Allen, who I know little about, seems to get some decent Heineken Cup games, so perhaps one to watch. The other whom I have read good reports about is Andy MacPhearson, again someone I dont know much about. Can anyone enlighten us a bit more please? |

Peter Allan is the Touch Judge who can't tell when a new ball is being used in a quick lineout in the Six Nations - not World Cup material at all... |

Peter Allen is not in the IRB good book's after his balls up over the 'right ball' situation in the Wales vs Ireland match.. |

Wayne Barnes is my favourite ref for rugby at the minute. The two red cards he gave out a couple of weeks ago showed his excellent man-management skills. I really hope he gets the final. |

Alan Lewis has announced his retirement at the end of the season. His non-selection for the WC was the deciding factor I gather though he had been discussing the possibility for some time with Paddy O'Brien and Owen Doyle. A long and distinguised career of 45 internationals. Happy retirement |
