I know there's a little bit of umpire talk on here, and wondered if there were any experienced umpires out there willing to part with advice? I've just passed my course and have my first games coming up. They're local 6th form games, and I'm keen to do well. I think what's getting to me at the moment is that I'm coming into the game as an armchair fan, and haven't played the game competitively in ages. It's all going to be little bit new and daunting, I think. The course was educational and fun, but I guess nothing can fully prepare you for being in the middle! I've got most of the equipment I think I'll need (though not sure how I carry it all on the pitch!), but am very wary of just having a total brain freeze the second someone appeals, or I'll forget which side to go when a shot is played, and get myself all out of position etc etc. I guess it's just nerves and they will go away with experience, but still, I'd be interested to hear of any other umpiring advice and stories of how it should be done. Just enjoy it. Take your time with appeals. Don't guess. If you are not sure then it's Not Out. Appear confident even if inside you are shaking like a leaf ! Hopefully you will have a good colleague at the other end to help you. Best of luck. |

Be firm, talk to the players, and don't be scared to take your time. A correct decision is often better than a quick decision. However, the most important part about umpiring a cricket game is having fun. |

Thanks for the advice. My first game is this Saturday and am looking forward to it a lot, even if the weather forecast is somewhat rainy. My first games are 2nd XI games and I'm told I won't be getting an appointed colleague, but working with the schoolmasters instead. I was hoping for an experienced colleague, particularly as I don't want to forget to do something important pre-match, but never mind, it's all good experience! |
