i was in hysterics the other day after watching the Eng vs NZ highlights on Sky...thanks to Mr Brent Billy Bowden! Billy leaping around like a kangaroo on fire for any sixes deposited out of the ground... and then the signal for when he needed the Tv umpire for Collingwood's run out was soo funny! Looked as if he was directing an orchestra with his hands flying around! BUT.. he is a good umpire and i think the cricketing world needs more 'Bowden's' |

The theatrics tend to distract people from the fact that he is actually an excellent, excellent umpire. |

I think that his style of signaling is good in the twenty20 format |

I read that Billy Bowden deliberately exaggerates his signals for Twenty20, and tones them down for 50-over and Test matches. |

Separately, I see that Simon Taufel is contemplating hanging up his white coat due to the 'travelling demands' of elite level cricket umpiring. I agree, Billy is a character, but more importantly, a superb umpire. |

That'd be a terrible shame if we were to lose the best umpire in International Cricket. Might make the ICC realise they need to expand the Elite panel though. |

I agree that Taufel would be a major loss to world cricket, especially as he is only 37 and could have many years left at the top although it's hard to imagine any of us would relish thirty odd years of international umpiring with all the travelling and being away from home that is involved. It appears that he may be attracted by the Indian Premier League or even the unrecognised Indian Cricket League. I don't know whether it's just a question of money or whether the ICC treatment of leading umpires (ie Hair and Bucknor) could be playing a part. I shouldn't think that the morale of the elite list would be at its highest. |

Taufel would be a huge loss to the game, but he has a young family and all the time spent travelling will be hard for both him and his family, so I don't blame him for contemplating it, indeed, Peter Willey declined the invitation to join the panel because of all the travelling it meant, and he is also an excellent umpire. |

For me, Billy Bowden is a wonderful umpire and his eccentricities only enhance my view of him. They add to his character in my view. We need more characters like him in life, never mind sport. I'd say he and Simon Taufel are the best two umpires. I hope Taufel doesn't retire, but I guess his travelling times are much greater than any other umpire, Bowden & Daryl Harper apart, and maybe he doesn't think it's worthwhile anymore. Perhaps, the ICC could have 1 "home" umpire and 1 neutral for tests as they do for one-dayers. Maybe, Taufel could reconsider then. After all, he misses out on many big games as the Aussies are the best team. |
