I don't know how many have seen this, but Harbhajan Singh has been banned for three games for alleged racist abuse against Andrew Symonds.

Is it me, or any time that the Asian sides are challenged (Pakistan ball tampering, Sri Lanka - Murali throwing, India - alleged racist abuse) they suddenly threaten something just to get the ban quashed, or get what they want? India are suddenly threatening to quit the series, and have refused to travel to Canberra for a tour match, and are currently beaching it in Sydney. It's almost as if the teams from the sub-continent feel that they are immune to the Laws and Preamble to the game.

If this happened to an English, Aussie, South African, New Zealander or West Indian player, I bet there would not be so much of a kick-off.

Now obviously, I don't know whether Harbhajan called Symonds a "monkey" or not, but this isn't some sort of kangaroo court, the players have all given their evidence, and to be honest I would fall on the side of the Aussies, because we know that these sorts of things have happened before.

It's all a bit wrong this if you ask me.

The Aussies are notoriously the worst for banter and abuse on the Cricket field and always take it too far without any reprecussions.
As soon as an opponent says something they don't agree with, they cry their way to the ICB and claim they are the innocent party.

I admit, if Harbahjan has said what he is reported to have said then he should be rightly banned.
But it is the saintly image that the Aussies are portraying that sickens me more than the reported 'monkey jibe' Harbahjan is reported to have uttered.

Steve Buckner to be replaced for the next test - OK so he made a couple of mistakes but, in my view, he remains one of the better international umpires. Haven't seen what evidence Mike Procter claims to support his decision but if it's one player's word against another then that seems dodgy - prefer Clive Lloyd as match referee.

What a mess, and as Crispy says this isnt a first.

For starters, if Singh said what he is alledged, he should be thrown out of cricket. No place at all for that in sport, and indeed society on the whole. But its been verhmently denied, and as Microscopist says it seems to be on the say so of Symonds only.

The incident reminds me of "Hairgate" in '06. No evidence provided that there was ball tampering, a full days play reviewed on Sky came up with nothing, Pakistan take it into their own hands, and the match is given to England in a total farce. A load of allegations and counter claims have been made, and continue to be made. Im sure the same will happen here.

Hopefully a lot of conversations will take place before the next test. I agree Bucknor should be removed, but unlike the Indians my problem was his shocking incompetance in several key decisions, as opposed to anything more sinister.

This will no doubt rumble on.

The Cricket authorities have again made a huge mess of things. Certainly it was not one of Steve Bucknor's better performances but this idea that countries can veto umpire appointments just because they disagree with a couple of decisions has to be stopped. Bucknor is a member of the International Panel with bags of experience and a proven record and they should have stuck by him whether India like it or not. If they decide they don't want to play, so be it.

If as some people think Bucknor is not the umpire he was, then at the appropriate time he should be dropped from the panel but not in the middle of the series like this. Supposing Bowden drops a clanger or two in the next game, if one of the teams complain will they replace him too?

The ICC have once again made a whole c**k up of the situation. Malcolm Speed should resign straight away, failure in 2 major situations to give support to 2 off their most experienced umpires. No wonder hardly any of the English umpires want to go onto the list look how they are treated.

Bucknor should not off been removed, not one of his best games last test however look how many excellent games he has had over the past however many years.

If India want to boycott the rest of the seris because they dont agree with decisions made, they should be kicked out of any future test matches. They are holding a gun to the appeals commission.

The international Cricket Council are a shambles - The Zimbabwe World Cup fiasco, Hairgate and now this, as I said earlier time for Malcolm Speed to go and go now!!!

I agree with most of what Demonref and Dumped have said. However I think Bucknor should have been removed. Just as the PGMOL give refs who gave big, match changing decisions wrong, he should be held accountable. Even the most die-hard Aussie would find it hard to state that they would have won if it wasnt for his decisions.
(If anyone thinks this is an anti-Aussie rant, bare in mind they won with 9 minutes to spare, and India have reported 7 decisions made agaisnt them in the match.)
Agree totally about Harigate and Zimbabwe though.

I agree with Andy the Machine, however the Select group referees very rarely get taken off a game they just dont get appointed the next week, which is what should happen to Bucknor he should have a few months rest.

Still calling for Speed to resign!!!

Just about all we need now is for the other international umpires to say they are all unavailable!

New Development

The tour may not go ahead after all. Was on SSN that the Indians have indicated the matches will only be played if the "slur" against one of their players is either dropped or dismissed.

Refreshing to see the Aussie public are turning on Ponting. He clearly influenced the lousiest Bucknor decision, indicating Clark had caught the ball when it clearly bounced first.

I see Hogg has been charged with a similar offence! It's getting blown all out of proportion IMO.

A hugely unedifying episode for cricket. I watched several sessions of an excellent match, and the could-they will-they pursuit of a record consecutive test 16 wins. Somehow, the Aussies have managed to get the amazing 16th win and hardly get any credit (even from the majority in Oz). That tells me they went way beyond acceptable means to win, when they found the going against them.

Sadly, a side effect of the Aussies turning the screws yet harder on the 5th day was a collapse in the Umpiring and some trading in insults between players.

Incredibly, the Australian captain reported an alleged insult by Singh at Symonds in the Indain first innings; neither he heard it nor did the Umpires. The match referee was forced into a bad corner; the ICC wanting action against racism, the hard evidence of said incident minimal. Apparantly the allegation was proven beyond reasonable doubt to Mike Proctor the referee: that is both Singh said 'monkey' and that Symonds felt racially insulted.

India have strongly protested the finding; stating not only wasn't there any reliable evidence, but the closest player (Tendulkar) didn't hear it either. I'm not sure I can blame India for being indignant, and wonder how the English might feel if Monty Panesar was treated similarly. Hopefully a more diplomatic way forward might have been found though.

The basic problem is the Laws of Cricket not being up-to-date with sledging (a legitimate tactic say the Laws), appealing when you know its not out (not an offence) and basic lack of respect player-to-player. All these points apply to Soccer, and I see a lot of the Aussie approach in Chelsea and (skilled and targeted) intimidation of referees and officials.

Shame.
