Steve Davis hasn't been performing too well for a while now. Pakistan reported him to the ICC for his role as TV umpire in the first test.

As for the recent appointments, it's great to see S Ravi given a chance after a decent performance in the India v England series. As for the tests, both Dar and Dharmasena suffered on their last tour if India, so I hope things have improved!!

On the Kallis dismissal, according to the commentators, it seems the rules state that in such circumstances, on review, the original decision for the alternative dismissal should be treated as "not out" and that as the ball would only have clipped leg stump, it should have been not out. I wonder what information Billy Bowden as third umpire gave to Steve Davies, assuming he knew Davies was giving it out 'caught'. If the 'out' decision had been for LBW, then it would have stayed 'out'. If BB realised he was considering an alternative dismissal, then presumably he should have made it clear the ball was only clipping leg stump.

Nice to see Martinesz given a chance at Test level, as he is a really impressive umpire. The ICC are very lucky at the moment, ad the International panel has some excellent officiating talent. Reiffel, Illingworth and Enamul Haque have already had Tests, Martinesz is getting this opportunity, and I wouldn't be surprised if others weren't too far behind (Cloete, Baxter etc). Some of these guys are coming along at the right time with both Davis and Hill not too far away from finishing.

Good to see Paul Reiffel in the mix.

All in favour of ex players, inc Test cricketers, being fast-tracked and appointed at this level provided they have the ability and he certainly seems to be more than capable.

never been a fan of Steve Davis-or Billy Bowden[Mr Gimmick]while Dharmesena impresses me.the rest seem a steady bunch.also thought Billy Doctrove often poor, in the shadow of Bucknor though.time Rob Bailey was stepped up.

In the first innings of one of the recent test matches, Billy Bowden's decision making was excellent, particularly with LBW appeals given out or not out. Poor Steve Davis had a torrid time with decisions being overturned on review.

I also think BB has toned down his theatrics in Test Matches, although still inclined to be rather dramatic with his signals in 20/20.

Is it just Davis and Oxenford from Australia who are on the Elite panel with Reiffel and Tucker on the International group?

Tucker is on the Elite panel, Reiffel the International panel. No real surprises for the NZ v England series with so much cricket currently brpeing playe. Reiffel will make a very good umpire, and I reckon he will replace Steve Davis in the not too distant future

Another good Test Match appointment there for Illingworth. I like the fact that the ICC is prepared to give International Panel umpires a chance at the top level. This month alone, Reiffel, Martinesz and Illingworth get a chance, and next month, Zimbabwe play Bangladesh, so I would expect another opportunity there for one of them.

Must say I was hoping for some different names for this series (Oxenford, Reiffel etc) so a little disappointed to see the big names.....especially Dar and Erasmus who will no doubt be here again for the Ashes.

As an added extra, Richard Kettleborough is heading to Scotland to oversee the 2 ODIs against Pakistan. Jeff Crowe will be the Match Referee

England v Australia - ODI series

Match Referee - Jeff Crowe

1 (Headingley): Aleem Dar & Richard Illingworth (TV: Sundaram Ravi)
2 (Old Trafford): Sundaram Ravi & Richard Kettleborough (TV: Aleem Dar)
3 (Edgbaston): Aleem Dar & Michael Gough (TV: Sundaram Ravi)
4 (Cardiff): Sundaram Ravi & Rob Bailey (TV: Aleem Dar)
5 (Southampton): Aleem Dar & Rob Bailey (TV: Sundaram Ravi)

Nice to see the ICC use an International panel umpire rather than purely elites. Must be a good sign for Mr Ravi as this is a top appointment for him. Seem to recall him doing well in the IND-ENG and NZ-ENG ODI series during the winter!
