In light of Steve Ganson's admission that he was wrong to award a try to Leeds Rhino's, can anybody explain what the offside ruling is in rugby please?

Not a total expert in this, but here goes. Note this is for Rugby League - Union is a different game, and I have no idea with that one!!

Generally, offside arises from a kick - and basically the receiver has to be infront of the kicker at the moment the ball is kicked for offside to be called. I don't believe there is a phases incident in this, if you are offside, you are offside for the whole play until you get back onside.

You can also be offside from a knock-on I believe as well. For a more detailed explanation, check out the Laws of Rugby League

With regard to this incident, it looks like it's a bit similar to encroachment at a penalty kick in football - it's very difficult to pick up on. I've tried to find a video of it on YouTube, but it obviously is offside given the reports on various websites and the public apology from Steve Ganson.

The offside rule doesnt come into effect if you are a totally inept, useless moron whose only goal in life is to try and stop the Bulls progress. Steve Ganson should never referee a rugby match again. There was an awesome weekend of Rugby league, yet we come out of it only talking about the actions of one clown. I wonder if that was his aim. Steve McNamara called him a joke, cheat, and said he invented a penalty to cost the Bulls the game. Get a hint, he hasn't been charged, in light of such garbage he had to face.
Oh, and the Leeds Rhinos coach had the decency to say some of Gansons decisions defied explaination. The worst performance ever seen by an official in any sporting contest.

Ganson and Klien been dropped for the weekend. Turns out Klien illegally (and wrongly) gave the worlds worst official a shout that Cook was offside. Little things really, like the videoref cant give such help, and Cook wasn't. What does this tell us about the use of technology? That we should only get people in who have the first clue what they are doing. I went up the levels the same time as Ganson did (he's even sent me off, I called him f##king useless, boy has he proved me correct!), and saw many refs who should have got 100 times further than him.

I don't wish to catalyse anything here, but may I just point out that one blunder (or one bad game) does not make a referee useless.

If he was useles he wouldn't be anywhere near where he is.

Besides, my question has been answered, so I don't know whether that means APR shall be closing this thread swiftly just as he does with the rest of my threads as soon as they reach a conclusion.

correct, but a mess of pretty much every game he's handled makes him an appauling apology of an official.

I didn't see the match - and I haven't managed to locate the incident (any help on this is gratefully appreciated!)

I will wait until I see the decision to comment further on Mr Ganson and Mr Klein.

When you do watch it, I sure hope youre near a toilet, you'll p##s yourself laughing!
You probably won't get to see the bit where he sends Brentt Webb to the bin for nothing. Even as a Bulls fan I thought it was ludicrous.
Still, he more than made up for it later!

I have now managed to find a video of the incident.

I haven't seen the match, so I have to talk the specific incident in isolation - the original award of the penalty is one of those 50/50 decisions that you sometimes get, sometimes not - this was Ashley Klein's error.

The offside award from the penalty - it is definitely offside, no arguements there - had the ball gone wide or gone over, we wouldn't even be discussing the incident here. No excuses, it is an error by Steve Ganson; one you would expect one of the top officials to notice.

My knowledge of the RL offside law isn't that great - I don't know whether this would still have been offside had the ball gone between the posts or wide?

It's unfortunately a poor decision - but I think you just have to put it down to one of those facts of life. I don't for one minute suspect any foul play from the officials - I think it is just a case of a genuine error/a lapse in concentration at a key time.

What I do find interesting is that Ashley Klein (the video ref) was used EIGHT times during the match - seems a high count to me!!

Rule Change

It seems the RFL have acted upon the error, which they should be applauded upon. You wouldn't catch the FA dealing with something so quickly!! We would probably be waiting for the fat cats at the FA until 2010! ;-)

The article says it's advice to referees, not a rule change.

Rule changes are brought in quickly. How long did it take to bring in that stuff about waiting until a player in an offside position touches the ball?

I too aplaud the RFL for making the best of a bad situation. It is a rule change as such TSO, refs who fail to follow the directives will find themselves in hot water, like they would if they failed to apply the laws of the game (My Cousin told me so, he's a national league ref).
This new directive should mean that the farce that occured that day will never be able to happen again. That can only be a good thing.
Just to answer your question, the law on offside (not interfering etc.) was in place before the '94 world cup (think Romarios' goal when Holland stopped, cos a guy not involved in play was off). The interpretation was changed though. So it was in the pipeline a long time, as opposed to the rapid action the RFL took.

Following a private email with Crispy, I thought Id clarify my views on both Ganson, and the Super League "merry whistle blowers" on the whole.
Ganson would have been at Headingly, with 500 participants with learning difficulties, refereeing their games if it wasn't for an injury. I was there, my brother was playing (wearing bulls tops at Headingley a couple of days after our play-off suicide was an error on both our parts!). The super league refs were superb, and seemed to be really enjoying themselves. My Brothers hat-trick came in a game reffed by Silverwood, who had a smile on his face the whole day.
Thaler, Betham, Smith, and Klien completed the line up. Klein and me had a good chat about all things league. Sure he saw my Bulls top and was expecting some stick. But hey, he was here to help folk with learning difficulties play rugby, I know how narked Id have been if someone had used the time to have a go at me. He was horrified at my recent altercation, but found the ending funny and wished me well.
Anyway my point. These are a good group of guys. I may not like the decisions they give, but credit where its due eh? Well done fellas, and my apologies to anyone on this site who took umbridge at the digs Ive had in the past.
Well done to the Rhinos, and especially Clinton Toopi, who got involved in the day far more then I think anyone was expecting. Id love him to score, and almost want the Rhinos to win tonight.
Key word in the last sentence- almost!
