Stick with Vaughan, says Fletcher

Duncan Fletcher has urged new England coach Peter Moores to stick with captain Michael Vaughan for both Test and one-day cricket.

Fletcher believes Vaughan can still become a successful batsman in the limited overs game, even though he has not made a hundred in 86 appearances.

Vaughan signed off from the World Cup by scoring 79 against West Indies.

"He showed the quality he has as a batsman and what he can do if he frees himself up," said Fletcher.

"It's just a pity it's taken a little bit longer than he would have wanted.

"The poor guy has been in and out of the side [because of injuries] and there was huge pressure on him to come back and continue where he left off.

"That is huge pressure to beat, alongside the pressure of not scoring runs and he wanted to get that elusive hundred," he continued.

Vaughan has already been confirmed as skipper for the Test series against West Indies, which starts at Lord's on 17 May.

His future in the one-day side, meanwhile, is likely to be a subject for discussion when Moores appears at a news conference on Wednesday.

Views? I can't help but thinking that Fletch is no longer our coach, and so should not make comments like this in public. If he want's to give Peter Moores some advice behind the scenes then fine, but he shouldn't give advice of this nature in public.

Reason being that if Moores now doesn't follow Fletch's advice, I cannot help but feel he'll be scrutinised for it.

I think Fletcher can say whatever he likes, just as the likes of Brearley, Gatting, Botham and Hussain can say whatever they like to the press.

My opinion is that Michael Vaughan's time in England's one day team is at an end, and I believe most people can see that. Hopefully Peter Moores is such a person. The England job is such that every decision he makes will be scrutinised anyway, so I don't think it makes a blind bit of difference.

I've always said I fancy Paul Collingwood as an England Captain. I also think KP would do a good job, he'd revel in that role. ;)

As for Flecth, they should have got rid of him after the Ashes defeat.

I don't think that would have made a great deal of sense going into the CB Series and World Cup so soon after. This is the first time they've realistically been able to make the change.

Change doesn't have to happen in between tournaments, it can happen whenever and should be done at the best time for the team and the Country concerned.
IMO, this should have been after the English Cricket Team were made a laughing stock to the world.

The only reason Michael Vaughan will stay in all the teams IMO is because he's the best we have at captaining the side. Apart from the games at the end of the CB Series, the results with and without him prove it IMO.

However he is not a ODI player and therefore should not be in the side whether captain or not. Teams should be picked based on how good they are in that form of the game. The captain should then be chosen based on the most able out of that team.

Vaughan is the best captain but he can't afford to be carried in an already pretty weak team if his batting is just not up to it.

Unfortunately, there don't seem to be any obvious replacement candidates that readily spring to mind but find one we must.
