The RFL this week announced its appointment of a panel of full-time professional referees for the first time.

The panel is made up of 6 refs - Ashley Klein, Richard Silverwood, Steve Ganson, Phil Bentham, Ian Smith and Ben Thaler. The last 2 are the surprises - Ian Smith refereed very few Super League matches last season but now seems to be back in the fold and presumably will need to give up his teaching post; Ben Thaler is only 25 but seems to be well thought of.

They will be supported by a panel of part-time refs as before - presumably Ron Laughton, Jamie Leahy, Peter Taberner and karl Kirkpatrick. Karl seems the most glaring omission from the full-time panel but he apparantly declined a place due to his work as a bank manager.

Interesting comment from Stuart Cummings the head of the RFL refs panel that appointments will be made on merit regardless of whether a ref is a member of the full-time panel or the part-time one and regardless of who they are. Hackett should listen and learn from this methinks!

I assumed that Karl Kirkpatrick was retiring at the end of last season, I think he refereed either the Grand Final or the Challenge Cup Final which in some circles was seen as a 'Token Appointment'

Why should Hackett take note and listen, when it is a different sporting body?

It's like saying take tips from RailLink. You just wouldn't do it  ;)

Well, it worked for David Elleray when the refs went full-time, and he stayed as Harrow housemasters, so I see no reason why it shouldn't work for Karl Kirkpatrick.

Plus it normally happens that the best referees have the best jobs too.

Take KK and David Elleray.

I thought originally that Ashley Klein and Russell Smith were on some sort of exchange just for a season. I think this is the third season now that Klein is officiating over here so do I assume that the arrangement is now permanent?

The Machine

Smith and Klien switching hemispheres were unrelated IIRC. Ashley has a wife and kid over here, and Smith went to the NRL for a short term only initially. We should only get Aussie referees in preperation for the tri-nations, just so we get to see how unbeliveably poorly they do their job.
Ganson full time?

Smith has emigrated over to Oz - so someone said on here IIRC.
