Belmont has led countless people, notably the Glasgow Orpheus Choir, by cool Siloam's shady rill; Belle Vue led JCFC to a Rhyl that was anything but cool and shady for Thursday 5th July 2018 Europa League Preliminary Round 2nd leg Bala Town 1 v 0 Tre Fiori Kristoffer Hagenes; ReidarMørkestøl Gundersen, Øystein Simon Ytterland. 4thers:Tom Harald Hagen. Fortunately the Belle Vue ground did provide shade in the main stand. Having had the misfortune to be drawn against the giants of San Marino, Bala found themselves trailing 3-0 after the first leg. Expectations were therefore not high. Mr Hagenes, in his first year on the FIFA list, is very tall and improbably thin, accentuated by a long face, but sported a healthy tan - the weather in Norway must have been good. He started well, not impressed by a second minute fall by the Tre Fiori number 9 and returning to have a stern word at the next stoppage. The first half was a dull affair, with little goalmouth incident, the best chance falling to the visitors, with a save from the Bala keeper followed by a low cross that did not receive the necessary touch. Two players had tangled near the touchline, with the visiting number 13 seeming to give a little kick at an opponent on the ground. AR1 moved swiftly, but no further action was taken, leading to angry cries from the home dugout and an extended tirade from a voice in hte stand, repeated informing the fourth official "and you do NOTHING!" Mr Hagenes gave a no more warning to the Tre Fiori number7 just two minutes after the restart, but was soon exercised by a succession of injuries to visiting players. The voice in the stand repeatedly declared "He's conning you, ref." This was not the case: Mr Hagenes was well aware what was happening, but was not able to stop it. The first yellow came on 55 minutes for a foul on the keeper by the Bala number 7. The home side were having a much better second half applying almost constant pressure, but grew frustrated by the visitors' delaying tactics and after the home number 12 reacted things grew rather scruffy. The loudest cheer to date came on 72 minutes when the Tre Fiori keeper's play-acting brought him a yellow card. There was an even louder cheer five minutes later when Bala scored. They had the ball in the net shortly afterwards, but from an offside position. Three further yellows went to Bala players in the.closing stages, but it was the San Marino players who were celebrating at the final whistle. One spectator repeatedly opined that "This referee's been good." JCFC's view was a little more ambivalent. On the plus side, Mr Hagenes was very fit and was quickly on the spot to intervene and prevent situations developing. He worked hard to hurry things up, regularly chivvying the keeper over goal-kicks, which was effective. Less effective was his attempt to make injured players leave by the shortest route: two paces towards the touchline before resuming the original diagonal plod.To his credit also, he allowed 7 minutes - and a bit more - of added time. He has a very strong whistle, but his slightly stroppy manner did not appeal as much as the calm approach of a Kuipers. It was not the most straightforward of games for what was presumably his debut in this competition, but on the whole he got the major things right. |

I would have thought that following the destination, if not the footsteps, of Mary Jones (an approximate contemporary of the author of Belmont) was perhaps appropriate for this fixture. |

You don't half know some stuff, microscopist! I've had to rely on Google to find out about this lady. I don't envy her a 26 mile walk, but, having decided to try to break in some uncomfortable shoes, being barefoot would have had a certain attraction for me. |

I once played the part of her father in a musical called Greater than Gold! Also camped with the Scouts quite close to her home in Wales. |

Crewe was still the overnight base ... but this time there were no virgins in evidence. I'm back there this Thursday, so perhaps they will bring in a fresh supply. |

A kind thought AT, but bother not on my account. I'm quite content with Lily, Sharon and Rose. Besides, they might have found it difficult - I heard all 16 had been seen leaving for the coast. |

It was back to Rhyl for Thursday 12th July 2018 Europa League 1st Qualifying Round Connah's Quay Nomads 1 v 3. Shakhtyor Soligorsk Juri Frischer (Estonia); Silver Koiv, Dmitri Vinogradov. 4thers: Joonas Jaanovits. The interest before the game centred on the craggy-faced delegate,,, who looked as if he should have been in the dock at The Hague, and appeared to be striking fear into the home officials. Further entertainment finally came in the form of a kilted drum and fife Cambrian Band, which did not do much for Mr Delegate's humour. Not inappropriately he comes from Grimbergen. Fortunately for the officials, the Observer seemed a more human soul. The assistants and the fourth official looked as you might expect of North Europeans, but Mr Friscner had more of a Latin look. Of moderate height and slender build, he showed a good turn of pace when required. The Nomads initially seemed to be afflicted with a Hitlerian number of balls, resulting in a long wait when it went out of the ground. Someone must have nipped down to the sports shop in Rhyl as play was able to restart - for a minute or two. This time someone raced back to Connah's Quay. On 8 minutes Shakhtyor went the length of the field in a rapid move and the home keeper was relieved to Palm the ball away. On 15 minutes, while waiting once more for a ball (the home officials were searching for one on E-bay) there was a sudden blast of Mr Frischer's whistle and yellows were shown to the home number 17and the visiting 88. From this point there was a lot of bodily contact, with occasional claims of illicit use of arms, but to his credit Mr Frischer was always quick to move in to forestall any escalation. The Belarussians went ahead on 20 minutes, the home defence parting like the Red Sea. Their second came on 33 minutes, a free-kick first coming back off the wall and then being fired straight through it. On 44 minutes the visiting keeper tried to take a free-kick a dozen yards forward of the right spot and was told to move it back. He did, about 18 inches and was told again. This time Mr Frischer let it pass, but rightly refused the keeper's claims that a Nomads player was too close. Company's Quay started the second half with a flourish and after a spell of pressure they won a free-kick, forcing a save from the keeper. The game soon became scrappy once more, the Nomads receiving two yellow cards to the visitors one, before Shakhtyor got their third, direct from a free-kick. Two more yellows went to Welsh players, amid much wailing in agony. The home side, too, joined in, and won a free-kick, which led to a penalty in the 87th minute and finally got on the score sheet. Mr Frischer worked hard to keep on top of things, in what was an untidy rather than a dirty game, and in the end was largely successful. His quick reactions prevented incidents on several occasions and he used a strong whistle effectively. If there were occasional reservations over decisions, overall he did well enough - certainly better than most, if not all, of the players. |
