I read an article in the Times last week (unfortunately I've not kept it) which recounts the time when former PL ref Mark Halsey was asked by a player if he could be cautioned during a forthcoming match. The player was a habitual offender and was one game away from a one- match suspension. The player was happy to miss a low key midweek game but wanted to be available for a key derby match the following weekend. Mark apparently told the player that if he booted the ball away after committing a foul, he would caution him. The player duly obliged and the caution duly followed. The player was content and no-one else was ever the wiser. No names were given but 2010 was mentioned. This was before my time with RTR and I don't know whether this will have been discussed before. I'm not sure this was morally appropriate but since Mark was merely following the rules in cautioning the player, I don't think any action could have been taken against him even if the authorities had been aware of what was said before the game. |

Many a player has orchestrated a caution to get suspended, some habitual offenders around Christmas time so they miss Boxing Day or New Years Day. They just didnt ask the ref first |

None story for me. Players know well that if they hoof the ball away they are getting cautioned, they don't need to ask the referee to know that. |

You'd be surprised! Similar story happened with ex England international Michael Ricketts (remember him?) when he played at Hull City (can't remember the team - Cardiff City maybe?) in possibly 2005 or 2006? Approached the referee in the tunnel before the game stating he needed to get cautioned that game. His manager had apparently instructed him to get a YC as he had an operation booked for the next midweek and needed to miss the following weekends game. As the game wore on the referee mentioned to Ricketts that he still hadn't been cautioned, and then Ricketts approached the referee after he gave the next free kick and did nothing more than kick the ball about 80 yards after the most obvious foul was given. Happened often when I referee and a player had a suspension looming. In Australia we run a play-off system so a round or two before play-offs. While this may be inappropriate the other option is a player deliberately fouling an opponent to get the YC. The Halsey approach is surely the lesser of two evils. |

At the other end of the scale was Steve Foster's attempt to get himself sent off for a second caution knowing that it would lead to a suspension that would end before the 1983 cup final while his single caution would result in a suspension that would cause him to miss the final. Despite his best efforts the referee (whose identity escapes me) was reported to have told him, 'I know what you're up to do but whatever you do, I’m not sending you off.' |

Mark Halsey did an interview on CNN very recently and definitely described this story. Some of you won't feel the same, but I think it's dodgy as hell personally. https://twitter.com/cnnsport/status/1013021957275705344 |

Doesn't mean it's not boastful rubbish imo - 'see how much the players loved me...' Thanks for the link |
