It seems strange to me that at least one of A Madley or Coote (possibly both) won't referee a play-off game, amongst the most important of the Football League season, when they have each had a trial Premier League game and apparently are two of the five names being considered for promotion to the Select Group, suggesting they have been amongst the best of the Football League officials.
This is, in my opinion, a debate worth having. These play-off games are of crucial importance to the teams involved, so how should referees be allocated. The present system seems to favour appointing the best National Group officials as a 'reward' for a good season. I can remember in my refereeing days that the finals and big games were usually given as a reward, although that was often for loyalty rather than ability.

The other view is that these important games warrant top officials, who are generally available at that time of the season. (Nolan actually suggested this at his otherwise cringeworthy post-match interview.) So which route should we go down.

I happen to believe that referees are there to serve the game, and paying fans do not go to games just to watch a referee. The game is all-important, not individuals. So top games should get top referees. There is too much at stake to resort to sentiment. Perhaps this season's experience will change things, but I won't hold my breath!

What a magnificent appointment! Mr Webb has had a very good season, and signalling to me he will be in SG2 next season. Really happy for Mr Brookes getting 4o, I echeod a posters thoughts that he should at least get 4o duties. Solid set of Linesman also, with some mentioning to me a few weeks ago that Mr Treleaven will become a permanent fixture on the lines in SG2. Congrats to all.

David Webb has been knocking on the promotion door for a little while I think and now it looks as if it may be opened to him. Brooks is clearly on a quite swift upward trajectory.Well done to them both and their colleagues.

I agree it's strange that A Madley and Coote have not appeared in Play Offs. Perhaps their dates were closed but that doesn't seem likely if they are pushing to get promoted also.

On closer reading I see A Madley did get a 4th appointment in the semi-finals but Coote entirely absent by my reading.

Another absentee which surprises me is Dean Whitestone who I think is one of the very best National List referees.

I thought Andy Madley or Rob Jones would get the L1 final but those appointments point towards David Coote.

Again, England would probably have been my favourite for L2. John Brooks perhaps? Or David Webb?
Excellent predicting johnlcoyle

Is this the same Sam Lewis, who lived less than 100 yards from St James Park?

Seems incredible that he gets a ECFC match in such an important match.
