Some very poor officiating in the Exeter 2nd leg, most notably when Read was pole axed from behind in the box when it was 3-1.

Definitely a penalty and no wonder the Lincoln bench was giving Heywood some serious grief on the touch line.

Story of 2 assistants...one gave a decision for handball from 30 yards away when the ref was closer disallowing Lincoln goal..and the other didn't give a decision from 20 yards for foul that anywhere else in pitch a foul
Not sure about Mr England, at times looked very good, but some decisions especially Arial challenges where very random

Darren England actually controlled a very physical game well and was the only one of the three of them that can cover himself in a little bit of glory because Grunnil and Mellor got the 2 big decisions wrong Lincoln’s goal that was ruled out should have stood in my opinion because there was a push in the back of the Lincoln player so he inevitably hand balled it and also Lincoln should also have had a penalty how the assistant didn’t see it I will never know so Lincoln can feel aggrieved that they at least didn’t take it to ET

Decent appointment. The assistants were relatively easy to pick once the semi finals were announced. Surprised they have used a SF ref as the 4th but good luck to them all

Excellent appointment for Rob Jones during his first ever season on SG2...he is clearly heading places in the world of refereeing!

How were the assistants 'relatively easy to pick'?

Rob Jones and Neil Davies were both on my refs' course as 14 year olds way back in 2001 so we must be doing something right on The Wirral eh?

I also wondered why. I presume that it is because they are SG2 assistants who have had a trial game in the Premier League this season.

Assistants having a mare at Notts v Cov
Good Notts goal wrongly called offside...then few minutes later two offside miised in Cov goal...feel sorry for Mr Drysdale who is having a very good game

Dan Robathan has had Premier League appointments so was always gping to be involved at some point and folllowing the semi appointments Neil Davies' name was a notable absentee based on number and quality of games he has had

Darren Drysdale did have a decent game (never thought I'd say this having watched him blunder his way through loads of Doncaster games since he was a Panel referee) but the offsides were poor calls. The second one was at least close but Forte was nowhere near offside.

I thought Kevin Nolan had a point when he said he thought the best available officials should do these games. Most SG1 officials are at a loose end this weekend and they should be doing these games, given their importance.

Ron Ganfield had a penchant for making baffling calls when he was on the SG assistants list so no real surprise he's been at it again... a trully diabolical decision for the disallowed Notts goal which completely changed the game.

Cheers, although by that reasoning, the likes of Andy Madley, David Coote and Simon Hooper would have been involved somewhere.

I admit to having a vested interest in the game, and concur that the penalty last Saturday was an appalling call from a referee who had a dire game. However, the second leg was far better refereed by Darren Drysdale.

The main talking point was the Forte disallowed goal. The TV kept freezing the image as the ball was headed on by a Notts player. However, prior to this, the clearance was lumped forward by a defender for that flick-on, and two players, including Forte, were clearly offside at that point. In accordance with current practice, the linesman did not flag until the ball reached Forte, but the call was ultimately correct.

I would agree that Biamou (possibly) and McNulty (probably) were offside in the build up to Coventry's third goal. However, the reaction of Nolan after the game was inexcusable. He showed his ignorance of the rules in blaming the officials completely for his team's defeat, exonerating his own team for a 1-4 defeat, and showing a complete lack of grace in failing to acknowledge how well his opponents had played.

As an aside, it should also be remembered that McNulty was also flagged offside when through on goal in the first half, when replays showed he was clearly onside. A mixed bag from the officials, especially Mr Ganfield, but the 'big' call for Forte's disallowed goal was actually correct.

That isn't right, the offside can only be judged from the flick on, not the first ball forward. It was a terrible decision and can't really be defended.

Well, I believe that is why Ganfield flagged it. He stood still from the original pass and raised his flag as soon as Forte headed it, rather than following play. He cannot have thought he was offside from the flick on, although another player was.

Nevertheless, Nolan's post-match attitude was graceless and unnecessary, especially as his team had been comprehensively beaten on the night. I don't buy this idea that the decision changed the whole game, as Notts were second best for 80% of the game. Not as if an odd goal decided it. As they say - couldn't happen to a nicer chap! :tu:

He certainly seems to be in line with play at the moment the ball is headed to Forte. You may well be right that Ganfield judged the flick on to constitute the same phase of play as the original pass and therefore raised his flag because Forte became 'active' when he touched the ball. That would be a bad misinterpretation of the current offside law and guidance however, and would give weight to the points - raised on Twitter by the likes of Halsey, Glenn Turner etc - about mental fatigue, the wiseness of having a 57(!) year old on the national assistants list and appointing him to a playoff second leg and so on. Only he will know what he gave it for but it was dreadful in any case. As for the decision not being a game-changer, it certainly was - were Notts to be level and mentally on the ascendency having come back from 2-0 down instead of having to keep chasing the game in the face of injustice they might not have conceded again a few minutes later (possibly from an offside that was not given) and be left needing to find two goals in less than 20 minutes. That they couldn't and in the end conceded another has a lot to do with the consequences of the wrong decision to disallow their goal, possibly as much as Coventry's otherwise good work on the night.

Ganfield is not 57 surely! His last Premier League season was 2014 and there was no way he was post 50 at that point. I think someone's maths is off somewhere.

Is he seriously? Wow! As a person he is lovely. Met him at Saints one day when guesting with another member of the team. He & bmb jr disappeared for about 20 mins and came back with chocolate cake, cookies, milk and chocolate! They went and raided the kitchen apparently because Jr was hungry!! Very gentle man with a huge heart. Maybe not the best AR out there but I really like him.

All a load of 'could have' and 'might not have', of course. Coventry were in the ascendancy for 75-80% of the game, having a bad patch after half time but then dominating the game again. Who can ever tell what may have happened if the Forte goal had stood? Notts were chasing it all night but their route one tactics were found wanting. By the end they were merely a rabble and could have lost by more.

The first game showed a similar pattern but the pitch helped their hoofball approach. That game should never have started, but that's another story. Nolan can spout his what-ifs and sour grapes all day long, but there is no doubt that the better team over the tie has progressed to the final. :cheer:

That's a terrible offside decision!

It seems strange to me that at least one of A Madley or Coote (possibly both) won't referee a play-off game, amongst the most important of the Football League season, when they have each had a trial Premier League game and apparently are two of the five names being considered for promotion to the Select Group, suggesting they have been amongst the best of the Football League officials.
