I thought Andy Madley or Rob Jones would get the L1 final but those appointments point towards David Coote.

Again, England would probably have been my favourite for L2. John Brooks perhaps? Or David Webb?

I concur.

Would be good to see Brooks get at least a 4th official posting for the L2 final.

A farewell appearance for Scott Duncan? Otherwise no real surprises other than the lack of Brooks and Webb given how many championship matches they have had this season!

Brooks is refereeing the FA Vase Final this weekend, so that counted him out of Friday-Monday for starters.

Ah, my apologies.

Well, I'm sure he doesn't need the Vase final and a play-off in the same week when there are plenty of other officials.

Personally I don't think so. I've only seen Scott once and he was good, and he seemed to do well with the key relegation match at Bolton last weekend. Both Darren Drysdale and Gavin Ward have had key matches on the FL this season, and their appointments to L2 playoff semis are probably a reward for good performances rather than a farewell to either of them. I would be much more inclined to believe that Andy Haines' appointment as 4O is his last, but who knows nowadays?!

Before SG2 came into being, the Div 1 and Div 2 Play Off Finals were awarded to the referees who finished 1st and 2nd on the merit marks and the Fourth Officials being those who finished 3rd and 4th in the merit marks.

Now Div 1 Final will be going to an SG2 referee I wonder if the same practice applies and the top of the SG2 merit table gets it and similarly with Div 2 Play Off Final, whoever is top of the National List merit marks gets the appointment.

These ones are done by National list/SG2 officials who referee the football league matches across the season. It's a couple of steps below in the football pyramid when the officials are more regionally based.

Watching Coventry v Nott's County, only one minute played & it is obvious that the ball is not running due to standing rain water. IMHO this match should never of started, it will only decend into total farce.

What was Gavin Ward thinking, I am afraid it shows he has been coerced into playing, a sign of a weak referee.

Yes. Goal line technology is being used in all the play off matches.

It's a pity VAR isn't being used too after Gavin Ward's embarrassing mistake to award Coventry a penalty. Very poor decision I'm afraid.

The penalty decision capped off what was a very poor evening for Gavin Ward. If he really is among the best on the National List then it shows how poor the standard is at that level.

I watch a lot of League One games and have to say I can probably count the number of "good" performances (as opposed to "adequate") on the fingers of one hand. John Brooks, David Webb, Dean Whitestone and Kevin Johnson strike me as the pick of the bunch, although I also haven't seen the likes of Michael Salisbury this season.

While there have been more positive reports about Mr Ward on these boards this season I was still surprised to see him appointed to a play off match. Not seeing him so often has been ones of my few positives regarding the introduction of SG2.

Totally agree. The standard is getting worse as the years go by, and if Ward is one of the best then my fears are confirmed.
There is a shortage of referees at this level who are good enough to feed through to the higher divisions and FIFA,hence no one in Russia.

I've only seen Ward live as an assistant when he was a regular visitor to Fulham.

However the referee Ward I witnessed for this game on tv produced some serious dross as mentioned.

Also, the Coventry defender who stamped on someone has had a three game retrospective ban applied.

Mr Rushton on the line had a very good night conversely, getting virtually everything correct.
