I realise that Mr. Kettle is a bit of a standing joke on here but I agree fully with Alan Swann's general point. The standard of officiating in Leagues One and Two is poor and it's time something was done about it. Although I came away from Tuesday night's game at Walsall seething at a spectacularly inept display by Doncaster Rovers, at least I could say that the game was handled well by John Brooks. Also his assistants seemed to be on the ball. Last Saturday Mark Heywood had a steady enough game but was let down by two poor assistants. One was unable to keep up with play and the other missed a key incident (which went in our favour) because he fell over! Since the mandatory retirement age was scrapped you get referees and assistants who stay on the list far too long. A lot of these seem to be concentrated in the National Group. Time for some younger blood, I think. It might also do something about the problem we have in providing FIFA referees. |

In reference to Alan Swann, this is in fact Alec Swann who is the older brother of Graeme. Alec is a local reporter who used to work on the Northamptonshire Evening Telegraph, as well as being a former opening batsman with Northampton Saints Cricket Club, having played first class cricket for both Northants and Lancashire. Alec is well respected within both cricketing and footballing circles in Northamptonshire, his father is Ray Swann who was also a respected cricketer for the same club, having played for Northampton Saints for many years, also representing Northumberland in the Minor Counties league |

For the avoidance of doubt Alan Swann and Alec Swan are two different people. The former (the Peterborough Telegraph reporter) is not the brother of Graeme and Alec although, just to further muddy the waters, he did used to open the batting for Peterborough Town. |

Apologies Ref Watcher, a quick search shows that you are 100% right, it is quite ironic that two persons with similar names even down to the surname being spelt the same cover the sport for publications that are neighbours and owned by the same group. |

They all have to pass a very difficult fitness test. They may well be old, but they most certainly are not unfit. I always cruised the L3 and L4 tests, but when I've tried the FL test I've struggled. If they are fit enough their age should be totally irrelevant. |
