'Yorkshire Pride'.Is there a pun in there? Used to be Yorkshire Woollen/Arriva but these days I am a long way from home. Sorry to hear about retimed trains re.Silsden[I hope to be on that line next week by coincidence].I was musing about bus Silsden-Keighley,then Bradford then Brighouse, but it is a big ask, even if possible. I was going to wish you a good journey in German but I fear the wrath of the moderators on here. |

I leave you to guess whether the swallowed Yorkshire Pride came from the makers of dog food in Harrogate or the Acorn Brewery in Wombwell. It was the 22.39 Arriva from Cleckheaton to Bankfoot, 20 minutes wait then First bus, reaching home roughly half an hour later than by walking. Even the sniffiest of moderators could not object to the word "Reise" - and I speak as an old reise myself. |

Wednesday 9th May 2018 NCEL Division 1 Play-Off Semi-Final Eccleshill United 4 v 2 Shirebrook Town Callum Gough (Barnsley); Michael Brown, Piotr Zak. 4thers: Benjamin Tomlinson. Mr Gough had a confident bearing - unsurprisingly, as there are few timid souls in Barnsley - but also a very pleasing manner, less common perhaps in that particular neck of the woods. He made good use of his smile in his one-to-one conversations with players and with one notable exception achieved a decent response. Eccleshill had a shot well turned round the post by the keeper on 25 minutes, the resulting corner being headed in to give them the lead. Two minutes later there was a dubious-looking corner to Shirebrook when Mr Gough looked to Mr Zak, who gave the indication. The disagreement was relatively restrained so the decision may well have been correct. In the end it mattered not as the danger was cleared. The home keeper did well to dig out a further effort shortly afterwards. There was plenty of combative play. When one tangle resulted in a free-kick for Shirebrook, their number 4 harangued Mr Gough at great length and with great vigour and for JCFC Was allowed to do so for rather too long. Next a Shirebrook defender went down, appearing to be caught by an arm just behind the play. There were protests as he was treated, byt Mr Gough impressed with the way he defused them quietly, though he had to lecture the Shirebrook number 11 for a perhaps retaliatory foul a minute later. The Shirebrook number 4 was warned for further dissent on 56 minutes, but carried on arguing throughout and was still going as he headed back into position. Referees at the top level seem to be obliged to accept that, but it should not be necessary for Mr Gough next season as a Level 3. Shirebrook equalised deservedly midway through the half and added another four minutes later. The game was becoming rather stop-start as Mr Gough was obliged to increase the frequency of free-kicks. Eccleshill pressed for an equaliser but as the game entered added time they had still not found a way through. At this stage they picked up the game's first yellow card, but on 94 minutes Shirebrook were not able to clear and Eccleshill equalised. The extra time was a problem for JCFC who had omitted to check bus times to cover such an eventuality. The most popular move of the evening was the belated move of Mr Gough's hand to fish out his yellow card for the Shirebrook number 4. A Shirebrook attacker went down as he ran towards the penalty area with a couple of players challenging and there was a brief flag from Mr Zak - hopefully for offside, as nothing was given. The home number 12 was the next recipient of a yellow card, Shirebrook heading the resulting free-kick just over the bar. At the turn-round, the visiting number 10 was the one to have a moan at the officials. A splendid shot gave Exxleshill the lead soon after the restart. With four minutes left, JCFC had to leave to avoid being stranded and so missed a further Eccleshill goal - and any other incidents that may or may not have occurred. As noted previously, Mr Gough has an excellent manner when dealing with players, but as mentioned the only previous time he had been seen, he does seem overly tolerant of dissent. Perhaps, given the importance of the match, it was a sensible attitude to take and what was quite a testing match was negociated successfully - and certainly the way he went about the first half-hour had JCFC purring. Once again a substantial regular season lead - 19 points in this case - proved of no significance in a play-off at Saturday 12th May 2018 NWCFL Division 1 Play-Off Semi-Final Prestwich Heys 1 v 4 Cammell Laird 1907 Anthony Ball (Wigan); Andy Cottrell, Kavan Hurn. This was the fourth match seen with Mr Ball in charge over the past few seasons. It is perhaps just failing memory, but he did appear to have shed several pounds since last time and appeared quite trim. He could not however compete in the thinness stakes with the very tall Mr Cottrell or young Mr Hurn. (The latter he called Cav, but it seems unlikely that Mr Cottrell answered to Pag.) Prestwich had a great chance in the opening minute, but made a poor contact. Laird's began to look the more dangerous, first putting a shot wide and then curling one onto the bar. On 25 minutes, though, a visiting defender failed to deal with a speculative long ball, leaving the home number 7 clear to beat the keeper and give Prestwich the lead. Two minutes later Mr Hurn flagged correctly for offside, Mr Ball did not spot it and the young man was left shouting "Tony, Tony" for some time. He needs voice projection tuition from Mark Findlay, as his cries went unheeded, but eventually after a free-kick had been awarded the stentorian bellows of a spectator did the trick. The game's possible moment of controversy came just after the half hour, when a Lairds player was clearly pushed from behind in the penalty area - foolishly as he was running away from goal at the time. Mr Ball signalled nothing doing, and oddly it seemed to be the home players who wanted their say before play continued, though there were questions from visiting players at subsequent stoppages. Laird's were awarded a free-kick on 35 minutes, their number 11 gave Mr Ball some lip and it was good to see the referee call him out for a strong ticking-off. Within a minute the scores were level through a headed equaliser. At the break one Laird's staff member made a bee-line for the officials to make representations. He was followed by another, who appeared to try to block the officials' progress with his arm. If Cammell Laird had looked the more likely side in the first half, they dominated the second almost completely, but not before Prestwich had had a goal disallowed for a foul on the keeper. Laird's created chances, again rattling the frame and finally went ahead on 70 minutes after a fumble by the goalkeeper. Two further goals late on confirmed their superiority, earning them a trip to Whitchurch on Thursday. In the end, the one debatable decision counted for nothing and Mr Ball had a comfortable second half. His refereeing is steady rather than spectacular, but it is pleasing that he has earned promotion to Level 3 for next season. Mr Cottrell, meanwhile, will be back up to level 4. Mr Hurn looked smart and efficient and will hopefully be upwardly mobile before long. As this is the last Pyramid game for JCFC this season, it remains to thank all who have contributed to this topic, especially paulfootball fan, who keeps Southern officials on their toes. Thanks must also go to the site's most important member - aaa, whose appointments listings are invaluable and much appreciated. Thanks, too, to all referees and assistants, operating at whatever level, for their work throughout the season; to most - though not all - players; and above all to all the club officials whose tireless efforts keep their clubs going, often against the odds. It seems that the Rainworth committee may be disappointed, as Skegness Town have moved ... into the NCEFL! |

And thanks to you JCFC for your excellent reports, especially from places I've never heard of! I find them a fascinating read and look forward to some of the officials you have observed going on to better things. |
